Dolby Atmos coming soon for home use

Word on the street is that there's an available title "or maybe titles" that already have Dolby Atmos tracks!

Rumor is that when Dream Works rereleased How to Train Your Dragon with a new 7.1 mix they slipped in an Atmos track at the same time!

Wouldn't it be cool if they slipped a Dolby Atmos mix in there at the same time? It's possible they did, but we won't know for sure until someone can test it on Dolby Atmos-compatible equipment or we get confirmation from the studio. The film was not released theatrically in Dolby Atmos (it came out before the format was available)

That sounds extremely optimistic.

Speculation on their part, besides the 7.1 mix was already released in 2011 for the 3D version. I seriously doubt they remixed it again and added Atmos on top of that, since the theatrical version was not in either format. The sequel of course is.

So when are we expecting some demos, videos and more information? There's lots of talk but so far I've not seen anything that makes me as a consumer interested (me as a film lover and one who'd love more enveloping sound is excited of course). I guess my question is, when can I go to a store, even high-end, and get a real proper demo? How long till this info comes out?

The big roll out starts at CEDIA in September. The first Atmos titles should be out for the holiday rush.

It's anyone's guess as to which stores will have proper Atmos demo rooms. It seems to be a lost art in this industry as more brick n mortar stores go by the wayside. However, they still need equipment, speakers, and discs first.

Yeah but I'm talking about when they repacked the 2d version with 7.1 they added an Atmos track. Again just a rumor but could you imagine the publicity they would earn being the first out the gate with Atmos content!

Other companies are months away from releasing there content but DreamWorks gets one in before there Rivals and makes bank! Unless Pixar knows something I don't...

as far as I am concerned - Sony is so out of the ball park - what? they've only done one movie in Atmos: 'Elysium' and they hardly support or have released but two movies in 7.1

Or even in 24-bit. It's frightening to know that some of their recent Blu-ray release is still in 16-bit.

They'll probably be the very last studio to ever embrace Atmos or DTS-UHD.

If it's not proprietary Sony tech, they tend to shun it... and then they go on to shunning their own proprietary tech soon after.

They're a very schizophrenic company. No wonder they've lost so much of their stock's worth.

This isn't always true of Sony. They've pretty much given up on SDDS (never pushed it as a home format) and did an Atmos mix for Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The more I hear about this, the less I think this will something with wide adoption. I doubt if people are going to invest in something this difficult and expensive to implement,


A new receiver, a new speaker array, and very few completed mixes from the studios - I just don't see it happening.

I highly doubt so. Doing an Atmos soundtrack is not a simple task. I really don't think any studio or producer is crazy enough to remix the soundtrack at this stage.

More likely, the producers will wait and see if there are enough people willing to spend additional money for a Blu-ray with Dolby Atmos soundtrack. It's something like the early stages of 3D Blu-ray. We started off with the first wave of 3D content from the cinemas, and once there's a sizeable market, the producers start converting older movies into 3D.

The first title mixed in Atmos was Pixar's Brave. I don't expect any movie that's released before that to have the soundtrack remixed to Dolby Atmos.

When the hell the did Die Hard get remixed in Dolby Atmos? If so they need to bring it out pronto, along with the first two Terminator movies!

Best movies to display Atmos are going to be movies with action and destruction! Independence Day should sound really good if remixed.

Are you referring to the movie by Rob Marshall, featuring Richard Gere?

I had hoped that with DTS: NeoX, we could see some of the SDDS 8 channels soundtracks on Blu-ray. But that was wishful thinking.

I need some honest opinions any of you guys that personally experienced SDDS-8C in cinemas. Was that 7.1 a significant different experience compared to regular 5.1?
