I think this is probably where mobile watching is going: People will be able to put on their VR goggles and watch stuff on a huge virtual theater screen wherever they are. Samsung's Gear VR can already do this to some extent (although the headset is still a bit clunky and the resolution isn't perfect yet). It works by slipping a mobile phone into the headset and using it as a display panel. It that sense, Steeldeel's doomsday prophecies of everyone watching on a phone might actually be correct.

Never going to happen. Teens will not wear a contraption like that. Not now and not in 20 years. Don't forget, they already have access to a big display when using their phone at home. Why would they feel the need to do the VR thing?

I guess you don't have teens in your household? What they watch on their phones are mostly clips on Youtube, Vine and similar services. They still use TVs for watching full length movies and TV shows (and the screen sizes are getting larger each year).

teens? No thank goodness.

Well, that is not what is being reported. Cord nevers (the younger gen that wont pay for cable etc.. Are apparently using their phones and tablets alone. No tv in sight. This a growing trend amongst the 18-34 age group. It's still very small, but like I said, it's increasing by the year.

Steedeel all you see are Tourist from around the World there in England, and of course all they use are Tablets and Smart Phones. You have to come to The States, and see Home Theater is only growing here.

What a bizarre post? Tourists? You are thinking of London. You do know we are not just one city right?
The U.K adopts tech very quick and we are considered a nation of TVs lovers which makes developments even more troublesome. Besides, many of the reports/surveys/blogs I have read actually include the U.S.A when talking of this development.

My point exactly, Reports/Surveys/Blogs, no real life experience. Just like HDX and Vudu, you should not really comment on this unless you have first hand experience. Tourist are all over England, not just London and if you have never been to the United States then I really don't think you can comment on the Trends here. England may give up on Home Theater, and Little Kindergarten Kids may take over but The States are different. We live in the Real World, and Streaming Digital is now with HDX and UHD! I watch Movies before they come out on Disc or the Movie Theaters.

Just because something is getting more popular doesn't mean it will continue to do so until it's standard. I'm not the least bit concerned that home theaters will go away. I'm also not concerned that all physical media will go away. My concern is that as streaming becomes more popular more and more titles will not be available on physical media. And after a while those titles will not be available at all.

Also I don't see the connection between not paying for cable and using phones and tablets. I don't pay for cable because I watch everything on Blu-ray or DVD.

You have the wrong idea about England. Our major cities wil get tourists but so do your major cities. Nothing new there.

Well, in that case I was right. I have told you guys where I come from. You all insisted it wouldn't happen, then you claim it may just happen in the U.K. That's bull. We love film over here. We love big tv in our living room. The point is that Cord nevers are the next gen and a lot of those folk are watching YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, Twitter over the Internet and via phones and sometimes tablets. NOT the tv. That applies to U.S.A and England. That is my point. If it can happen here it can happen anywhere.

You may well watch them. You are not getting the full experience though. I have seen Netflix Super HD and I hear it is comparable to HDX. Well, I can tell you that ain't a patch on Blu-Ray.

I must admit, since I’ve got my Soundbar at Christmas I’ve been buying a lot more discs recently.

But there are times when it’s just easier, say when I’m upstairs to just put on the Apple TV and put on a film that way.

So I think it’s good to embrace both worlds.

But you are right that the younger generations will just merely watch the majority of their entertainment via streaming methods. My 4 year old nephew can whizz through Youtube like he’s known it his whole life. And that’s because he has – he’s known no different. I think the thing for me is that my 4 month old is going to eventually ask me when she’s older what a VHS was and that makes me feel old….. haha

Well Netflix Super HD is probably like Amazon HD, and I can tell what you guys talk about soft HD which is nothing like Vudu HDX. Like I said I have a 62" HD DLP which is Projector Quality, and have compared Blu-ray Discs and I can't really tell the difference. I usually watch the Movies with my Sony High Dynamic Headphones, and the latest great Movie was the beginning scenes of The Revenant walking through the swampy waters and picking up all the sounds......Fantastic Streaming! Like I said, if you are set up properly it's just like the Movie Theaters.

If by Super HD, we're referring to Ultra HD, then I think it looks quite good on Netflix. House of Cards and Marco Polo look awesome in Ultra HD!

So why not give yourself the very best experience? Or do you watch films on a portable device?

What you don't seem to understand is that using streaming services doesn't mean you have to use a small display or mobile device. It's just another option when you're out and about or traveling (or perhaps you're a sulking teen who doesn't want to come out of your room ). It also doesn't mean that you have to live with inferior quality. Streaming is about to pass even Blu-ray in that respect. Anyway, I don't know anyone who watches Netflix on a phone when they have access to a large screen. OK, teens sometimes do crazy things, but so did we when we were that age.

Which service surpasses Blu-Ray?

I wrote "is about to pass". UHD-based streaming is now better in some respects (resolution, in some cases HDR). Blu-ray still has an edge due to the higher average and peak bandwidth, which gives it more headroom to avoid artifacts in difficult to encode material. But streaming bandwidth is only going up, and newer codecs make encoding more efficient, while standard Blu-ray is standing still. It's just a matter of time, and we're almost there.
