The Criterion has the same yellow tint. Just the contrast was adjusted a bit so the colors seem ever so slightly more vibrant. But the difference is so very subtle that I think it does not make it worth exchanging the Eureka BDs for it or not getting the 4k version if you are interested

Actually, it doesn’t, in fact, the first PS is IDENTICAL on both versions. Only PS2 had them just very slightly alter contrast, which doesn’t change the color timing at all. The screen caps from caps-a-holic speak for themselves.

Like the other people who posted before me in the UHD thread I would take the reviews on this site with a grain of salt.

Although Eureka did not have the budget to color correct the first two films (it would have required all new restorations which is VERY expensive) David Mackenzie did alot to bring out the very best in the 4K masters.

Audio & subtitles were upgraded on all the films and color correction was done for the export cut of Police Story 1 now in HD and we included the rare Cantonese Audio with the Kevin Bassinson score with subs as as a bonus.

Personally I think Police Story 1 in 4K
looks quite good!

The Extended Cut of Police Story 2 not so much but...

We color corrected and recreated the original HK Cut of Police Story 2 now in HD, did the Export Version as well.

We updated & added alot of cool extras for both films.

Add a restored color corrected version of Police Story 3 and I think you have pretty good value for your money.

Is the set perfect no, it was never going to be, but alot of hard work went into adding things specifically for the fans to make it worth thier while.

All in all this set is definitely an upgrade on all previous releases and I hope you guys enjoy all the hard work put into it.

Can titles not be colour-corrected in the disc-authoring, or round about that time. Most of the problems with the older transfers can be fixed on one's monitor, but that is a chore in itself.

Not sure how those screenshots you shared were captured, but the ones on caps-a-holic have identical color timing.

I also own both of those releases and didn’t notice any difference in the criterion release when I’m actually watching it on my tv, both releases have a heavy yellow tint. I honestly was hoping for an improvement on the criterion one, but aside from some new special features, I mostly considered that double dip a waste of money.

From your posts it’s clear your opinions are biased, so at this point I don’t think it’s worth trying to convince you of the evidence that seems pretty clear to many around here about the very minor differences between Eureka and Criterion’s releases of PS1 and PS2.

In regards to the UHD trilogy, save your money, spend your money, I don’t really care, I am just getting annoyed watching you trying to trash a new release you haven’t even viewed yourself yet.

IIRC, Fortune Star already did 4k HDRs for the first two Police Story and the Ritrovata yellow ting is baked in. Police Story 3 I believe Fortune Star only had a finished 2k DI of Ritrovatas work, but 88 and Eureka did get access to the OCN scans to do their own 4k HDR on.

First, "minor differences"? Look at the caps and NOT Criterion vs blu, bur Criterion vs 4K from this site. Night and freaking day. Also, by the same rationale, you're clearly defending a release you haven't even viewed yourself yet so let's agree to disagree, ok? You could also not read my posts idk.

You do know you're comparing 4k caps that have been converted to 1080 SDR? Likely they may have been converted incorrectly.

Yes, of course, but does that add a yellow tint? Nope.

Where in your world does the Criterion version NOT have a yellow tint?

The screenshots you linked are both from the eureka release, neither is the criterion.

Improper HDR -> SDR conversion can make it more yellow as I showed you previously seen with Le Cercle Rouge, which you managed to ignore

I see the difference in Le Cercle Rogue. Would I buy that 4K after seeing those caps? F no. 4K is so hit or miss we should be looking at reviews and dissecting every cap and audio track, etc. When I first got into 4K, that's what people told me - that it'd be more of a mixed bag as to what's crap and whats not. Clearly, Eureka couldn't do better so it's looking like it's gonna be one to skip. Idgaf what you buy in the end. All im dojng is trying to bring this new information to light, but if you think I'm trolling, clearly you have the bigger issues.

Funny that Le Cercle Rouge was mentioned, because people really criticized the colour temp on that UHD release, and yet, according to this info, that's the way it should look:

But is that yellow tint the way Police Story should look? I'm not an expert on the original but that Criterion looks good to me. Someone else said even it had a yellow tint, which I don't see at all and I just watched it last night. The caps from the Criterion don't even look yellow.

I didn't think PS1 looked yellow on the Eureka or Criterion, but it seemed excessively greenish and with heavy black crush.

If you think the Criterion looks good to you and not even that yellow, then you should be happy that the new 4K version looks practically identical color timing wise. Maybe it looks different on your computer monitor than it does your TV due to settings, but Eureka and Criterion have been using the same source this whole time.

I've no doubt that the upcoming UHD will be the best Police Story has looked on disc (and I'm only interested in the 2K theatrical reconstruction for Part II) but to think that someone intentionally borked it in the way it has been is really very sad. To go to the effort of a costly remaster and then crush it and give it and ugly grading is a little soul destroying for fans... if only because it's hard to imagine when we'll see anything better.

Can't wait to see how it turns out! But, I wish that you guys weren't lagging behind so much lately and now with Vinegar Syndrome in the US stealing some of your thunder.

Not sure why Eureka even bothered including it and wasting the space. The only salvageable thing would be Jackie and Michelle's voices. But, I have the US dvd`s for that. I've always hated the US cuts of these films.

You guys almost make me want to dip my toes in the 4k waters. I recently purchased a 4k TV but it died after a week so it got returned. That was almost an excuse to upgrade my player to a 4k one. Glad I waited but now I have to wait and pick another 4k TV and make sure that's going to work before investing in a player.

I`ve seen the first 3 PS movies in the movie theater and none of them looked yellow to me at all. They looked like how a normal film from that era would look, mostly. I know that's a generalization as not all films from a particular era look the same but it's always looked a little "grittier" but not yellow. But, I've seen people try to explain why a Ritrovata restoration would look yellow and it makes sense but I'm no film expert at all. I enjoy watching them and want them to look on home video the way I remember seeing them in the theater.
