I wouldn't personally go with the dipoles anywhere in my system. JMO.

I have had them in the past and prefere a more directional (sound location) point of sound. The diploles will disperse the sound leaving a somewhat ambiviant sound. (non directional) I personally like to hear sound effects carry from one speaker to the next and be able to track it audibly. Seems much more realistic and lively of an experience.

the reason i was thinking about dipole was so i could maybe get one that has one regular speaker and like a mini second one. The reason i thought of this was because most movies are in lossless 5.1 and i dont want to get a whole new set of speakers for the back surround. My receiver is an onkyo 605 and it cannot matrix 5.1 lossless audio to 7.1.

Sound is pure personal preference just like a peice of art. You may like a painting and the next guy hates it.

You having never heard a dipole set in action for the surrounds gives us no common frame of reference. You may enjoy them very much for all I know once you have them. Just not my personal preference is all.

i see what your saying. In your opinion though what would be a more ideal set up, one really good set of surrounds in a 5.1 system or an ok set of surrounds and an ok set of surround backs in a 7.1 system

I'm not sure what you are asking but let me say this...

If I had a 5.1 system only as you have, I would still never buy dipoles as the 2 surround speakers. I have an Onkyo 805, so I'm good for 7.1. Most movies are 5.1 anyway and dipoles would not by a longshot be my preference for the 2 surrounds. IMO.

The rest is for you to decide....

I would make sure you have decent quality for all five speakers. As much as you can afford. You can add a sub later or at least buy an inexpensive one for now.

7.1 is not a big issue at this point, but you can always pick up a couple speakers for those 2 channels in the future.

I can second the def tech speakers. I got the procinema 1000 for my fronts and center and using 4 pro800 for my surrounds. Sounds is way better then my onkyo HTiB speakers. The sound is more crisp and clear. Bestbuy has them for 250 a pair, but I was able to get them to price match a local store that sells them for 200 a pair. I say audition them first and decide for you self.

i have almost the same setup as you ak808 only i use the procenter 2000 and i use a 5.0 setup. they sound great in my smaller room. i am sure they would work in a bigger one as well. i have the definitive tech promonitor 800s as surround and they are wonderful. i got my 800s for $100 each.

so savage how do you like the procenter 2000? I was thinking about upgrading it to that but none of the stores around me have it hooked up or in stock. You think it's worth the upgrade? The procenter 1000 to me sounds really good as dialogue is clear unlike my old speaker where I was struggling to hear what they were saying.

i havent heard the procenter 1000 so i can't compare but i am very happy with the 2000. it matches the soundstage of the procenter 1000's very well. if you are happy with the 1000 though, then i don't see a reason to upgrade. i am really enjoying it. dialogue is very loud and clear, sometimes too clear that you can hear imperfections in the recording.
