Yes it will work. I just swapped out my 40GB with a 320GB Western Digital a few weeks ago.

Last I heard the firm ware would only support part of a large drive, something like 200Gb or so, I used a 250Gb drive in anticipation of a firmware upgrade... did that ever happen, or are you only using part of the 320?

It should work. I invested in a 500GB external that is hooked up through my router and works like a charm.

Question

It has been suggested that I should buy This

So what is the difference between what was posted previously and the one that was suggested to me? Save a few bucks and the serial # (suggested:WD2500BEVE; above:WD2500BEVSRTL ?!

I did this drive:
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digita...2504231&sr=1-1
And that way I had somewhere to put my 40gb PS3 drive and got an external drive for "free".(the 320gb drive sells for about 180.50)
****this does void your Western Digital Passport warranty and WD reserves the right to use an IDE drive if they choose*** But so far they are only shipping a 320gb 2.5 in SATA. It worked great for me(pretty hard to pry open/scratched the hell out of the case but who cares).I now have 248gb available and that may be after the 17gb back up I did, sorry don't remember.

While we are discussing this, I have a question. So I know how to switch out a hard drive. The only question I have is how to keep the xmb with a fresh hard drive. I know how to back up the game saves, etc. But how do you back up the xmb. Or is it already a pre-loaded file on the Ps3 that will automatically format itself to the hard drive that is installed.

Only buy that one if you don't want it to work in your PS3!
It uses the wrong interface you need a Serial ATA drive (SATA) for the PS3 to my knowledge.

If you mean your theme that is part of the back up. If you mean the "operating system" that is not on your hard drive at all so no worries.

All of the settings set in the XMB should be save on flash memory and not on the internal HDD. Changing the HDD will not remove the PS3's OS.

Although at your link it looks like you can get a new 250gb delivered for $115.00 though their marketplace sellers and that is a pretty sweet deal!

The XMB is loaded in non volitile memory, so when it is formatting your new hard drive, it is installing the OS, don't just back up the games, back up EVERYTHING, games, pictures, music, videos, the whole ball o wax. That way, when you restore, its like you never left anything

No, it does not void your warrantee

Yes, you MUST have a SATA drive

Not sure what the subscripts on the model numbers mean, probably something about disk cache and or speed... say what you want about transfer rates, but I HIGHLY recommend sticking with 5400 rpm drive... the darn units have heat issues as it is, using a 7200rpm drive only makes the heat worse.

Why do you guys need so much? I still have a ton of space left on the original 40G.

If you read my post you will see I am referring to opening the WD external hard drive case not the PS3. But I will edit it to make that more clear thanks!

Crap. One more question. So I know for an external hdd you have to format it on your computer 1st. Also, go through downloading a program that will format it to Fat instead of NTFS. So when u pop this thing in the PS3, will it automatically pop-up and do the install process correctly on the PS3 instead of having to format it using an outside source like a PC, etc. I just don't know where I will get all of the media to back up 29 GB. Also, it says that my OS (XMB) takes up 5GB. Now this was when I 1st got my PS3 at launch. If its flash memory why is it cutting into the HDD. And my final question, what is the best way to get the cover off. I don't want to scratch it like the other member if I can help it.

Yes it will automatically format it no need to do anything with your PC. And again the scratching I was referring to the Western Digital Passport HD I harvested my 320gb from, the PS3 is easy just gently pop the cover off with a small standard screwdriver. I've done it with both of my PS3 s and it is super simple!
