Rendering AVCHD crashing with Vegas!

I am struggling to render an AVCHD file (1440x1080i, 30fps) with Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9. I put together a 17 minute project from various clips from my Sony HDR-SR11, and after about 10-12 minutes (of the project) of rendering, Vegas crashes. I got as far as 70% though the project when it crashed (over an hour of rendering!)

It seems to be only related to the length of the project, because I have been render shorter clips. Has anybody had success rendering AVCHD projects longer than 10 minutes? Is there a patch that will help with this? Is there a setting that I have incorrect when I go to "Make a Movie" in Vegas?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I used Vegas 8.0 for editing along with Architect to author some AVCHD files at least one of which was longer than 10 minutes. The total video was over an hour long, mixture of video clips and JPEG images. I had problems burning a disc successfully and maybe an occasional crash of some sort. I assume you have a lot of disk space on your PC and plenty of RAM. I did find that I had to limit the size of the Vegas files timewise to something relatively short but it was longer than 10 minutes. I then would combine those files into one video with Architect. My biggest question was what format to use for the Vegas output to source into Architect to avoid recompression since the Architect stage would take up to 14 hours to render, a lot of which appeared to be recompression time. I never got a clear answer for that.

Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that Architect could not deal with HD. Did you manage to create an AVCHD disc with Architect?

I assumed that Architect couldn't handle HD, so I just let Vegas render and then burn the disc. Of course, then I wouldn't get a menu or anything.

Is is possible to burn more than one "project" onto a disc? It appears that when rendering an HD movie for an AVCHD disc, an image is created automatically. Is it one image per disc?

Better late than never. Sorry about not replying months ago, but on the other hand I just read some info that might help with your crash problem using Vegas. The author suggests for resolving crashes go to "Vegas’ Settings, click the video tab and lower the number of threads to “1″."

I do use Architect to create Blu-ray discs for playing in regular Blu-ray players. I have had button activation problems but that seems to be an issue of compatibility between the Blu-ray player and the TV itself via HDMI. This is probably not what you were asking, but might be relative to your question.

Vegas 8.0c is crashing on me all the time unless the total clip length is under 1 minutes. I have e6600 with 2Gb Ram and crashes only started to happen when I switched to AVCHD format when I bought my canon hf10.

the only workaround that helped me is to use next workflow:

1) edit everything
2) render to loseless avi (sony format) - it does take a lot of space on your hdd, a lot
3) render loseless avi to format you really want

This workflow works fine for smaller clips under 15 minutes and clips with only 2 layers. It crashes as well on long clips and clips with a lot of layers and special effects. So in that case I split the whole project on parts and render each to loseless and when create a new project, put all the parts and when render to format I want.

Pain in the ass, but it was the only thing that worked for me. All other tweaks like the one suggested above did not help me.

I will be looking soon at vegas 9.0 - hopefully it will work with AVCHD properly

Yes i have a continuing problem with mpeg 4 editing rendering

It must be a fundemental problem and not any software conflict i am certain.
it allows me to render to a percentage of the project in megtabytes, certainly the number of project media files used also is a factor in how long it is prepared to render before throwing in the towel and just stopping

vegas allows a HD timeline to be rendered to a 3 minute avi file and stops at 50%
to 720 wmv. stops at 18%
to full HD stops at 12%
etc etc

I get a low memory warning from vegas. this is rediculous as my machine is hi spec with oodles of headroom in all departments

I then have to use task manager to close the program as it tells me a background procces is still running .

I am unable to stop the background message so have to shut down and reboot to restart and this cycle will just go on imperpatuity.

If Sony vegas can start rendering what the heck is the big deal with the file size limitations.
Could it be my settings in vista 64?
