Default Easter Egg on every SPHE Blu-ray disc

This is interesting. I just got my Spider-man Trilogy and the booklet inside says Try The PICTURE CALIBRATION EASTER EGG available on every SPHE Blu-ray disc.

From the menu simply type SONY (7669) on your remote control.

Has anyone tried this?

This is old news for most posters here, but it's a good idea to keep people refreshed on it. Thanks.

Yea I have been buying blu-ray movies for over a year, but I never payed attention to the inserts. Guess it is good to pay more attention to that stuff.

Inserts? They have inserts?

Yeah, I know what you mean, I didn't know until I started lurking around here that they had this option.

I knew about it even before I bought my first Blu-ray player or Blu-ray disc.

That's the definition of the word "lurking", I guess.

I don't think they can really call it an "easter egg", aren't easter eggs hidden (not advertised) I think the word they should have used is feature as in "every Sony BD disc has a Calibration feature" anyways I tried it but didn't understand it lol.

One easter egg I think would be cool is space invaders or something BD-J or something maybe in the background the credits of the people who deisnged the menu's and so forth for the BD disc with the space invaders game hidden in it... :P now THAT's and easter egg

but calling it an easter egg makes it sound cool and well you do have to know where to find it because it doesnt just jump right out at you. you kind of have to figure it out like i watched Final Fantasy Spirits Within with that code to see if i could find what they mean by it and i have no idea at all where it would be

When the title menu comes up on the disc...you can hit the numbers and the screens should start appearing. LOL...guess I was a bit slow on the trigger on the answer.

Here's a quote with instructions from Paidgeek

Most of our discs have at least 4 test patterns included, SMPTE bars, monoscope, ramp and cross hatch. The first adjustment I usually concern myself with is the black level or "brightness". Bring up the colorbar signal and pause your player. Turn up your monitor "brightness" and confirm that all 3 pluge chips are visible in the lower right hand corner of the screen. If all three can be seen, then you have confirmed that your player and monitor are passing signals "below black". Next, adjust the brightness control down until the right chip is just visible. You now have an optimum black level setting. Put the player back into play mode and chapter skip to the next pattern, the monoscope and pause once again. Ideally, you should see a complete image with 16:9 shown at the corners and no truncating of the triangles. If you don't see the full image, check if you monitor supports "full pixel", "dot by dot" or some other description of a mode that allows a 1:1 relationship between the incoming signal and the pixels on your display. Some displays do not allow the disabling of "overscan" so you will not be able to make this adjustment. The monoscope is also useful for checking over sharpening, or filtering of the image. Ideally the round patterns comprised of wedges should be clear, sharp with no asymetrical gray bars or ovals. Distortions in the pattern usually indicate that a scaler is being used in the display. Also check that the squares comprised of 2x2 pixel black squares are distinct. If sharpening is used, the black or white portions of these squares is often exaggerated. And finally can you read the text on the bottom of the pattern for the company that created it? If you can, you are likely getting a full 1920 x 1080 image.

Of course there are many other important settings for Contrast and color, but these settings need to be adjusted according to your average room light. I recommend turning off all of the processing that is available in todays displays such as Noise reduction, DRC (Sony) or whatever a given CE company happens to be calling their image enhancement feature. If you have a good blu-ray disc, "Black Hawk Down" for example, you should be able to see the film grain from the original master faithfully reproduced. If it looks mottled or irregular, there is a good chance your display is using noise reduction or other processing and hurting, rather than helping the picture quality.

I recently asked paidgeek if SPHE would mind doing something like the THX Optimizer with specific instructions on how to calibrate the HDTV. AND to inform people about the difference between 1.85 movies and 2.40 movies on a 1.78 HDTV. He said that's a terriffic idea that SPHE would investigate on. I don't know if it's for the former or the latter. But either way, it'll be a good move by SPHE.

Yeah, it's the same process. Not sure how to do it with just the controller but with the bluetooth remote, I just pressed the appropriate numbers and it goes to the calibration stuff. Did this while sitting at the main menu.

I don't recall seeing numbers on my PS3 controller... I'll have to check that. (/endsarcasm)

So, I have to have the BD Remote to do this?? That kind of sucks if it is the case... the last thing I want is remotes for everything laying all over. Do not need another remote.
