Default Opus Arte to start releasing operas on Blu-ray in Feb

Opus Arte has so far released an opera and a couple ballet titles on HD-DVD. I just sent them an email asking what their plans are for blu-ray, and I received this response:

Thanks for your email. We will be releasing Blu-Ray DVDs in February next year and hope to release one per month.

If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

Jen

No one cares? Even if you're not into opera, at least this means a studio is going from hddvd exclusive to neutral. That's definitely a good thing!

Take a pill, just because no one jumped on it and said WOW doesn't mean the no one cares... the people who would care are just far to restrained to have such a public showing of glee...

The REAL question is, which operas are they going to be releasing? There is a really good Carmen with Agnes Baltsa in the lead role from about 20 years ago that I wouldn't mind picking up mezzos are SO much easier on the ears than true screaching sopranos.

I'd love to see the film version of Carmen with Julia Migenes and Placido Domingo released. That's quite an experience.

Also, the Ring Cycle...not the stinky one from the Met. But a sexy one from Bayreuth.

Opera I prefer live and drunk, but I'm definitely interested in the ballet titles

George Balanchine’s Jewels
Stravinsky – The Firebird & Les Noces

and the documentaries

Jacqueline du Pré in Portrait
Astor Piazzolla in Portrait

Yippee!!!

I held out buying opera DVDs with the hope that one day we would get Lossless Audio.
It was tough, but looks like my patience is about to payoff.

I was looking up the Wagner operas last month, and had to skip over a half dozen better productions on Netflix, in favor of one mediocre one, just because it was in widescreen.

(Although it's rare that you do get a good production from an indie classical-video house, as they tend to go for the weird modern restagings...
Most of Opus Arte looks fairly straight, though.)

This is great news. Opus Arte produces some of the very best opera DVDs and it'll be great to see them in hi-def. (But I don't like the fact that they don't include LPCM tracks on their SD DVDs (at least on the ones I have); hopefully that will change with their BD releases.) It killed me to see them release their Covent Garden 'Magic Flute' on HD DVD (I've got it on SD DVD, and it's terrific); I hope this one gets a BD release as well (with LPCM and/or lossless audio).
