Sony probably figured people would use one of their controller cables to charge the other at the same time.

First impressions:

I played Horizon for about 3.5 hours yesterday just fine. And then, I started getting hot and queezy. I don't know why I was able to play it with no issues for 3.5 hours before the sickness started to set in, but I had to take off the headset, take a break and get something to eat.

So, after I started feeling better after my break, I decided to jump back in. Played for another 2 hours and still didn't feel great. I had to put it down. I literally laid down and fell asleep on the floor. My wife woke me up and I just had to go lay down in bed for the night. I was exhausted.

For some reason, PSVR2 wore me out. I didn't even get a chance to try anything else.

I'll try again today.

Anyway, resolution was definitely better than the PS VR, but it's not mind-blowing like I was hoping it would be. There's still some aberration/blurring around the edges of the lenses. I am starting the think that's just a characteristic of VR. Screen door affect also still exists, but the black levels are waaaay better.

As for comfort, I think that the PS VR was way more comfortable. The shape of the silicone on the headband on the PS VR2 is more contoured and doesn't fit the shape of my head. Causing some discomfort. I also have to clamp it down tighter so that it doesn't slide off of my head. I think the weight distribution is different on the PS VR 2 headset.

Eye tracking is super cool in the menus. My son watched on the TV screen and could totally see the foveated rendering in action.

The eye-tracking seems to be getting universal praise. It's cool to think about how this will impact accessibility for VR in the future.

On the other side of the spectrum I've been seeing reports of chromatic aberration, ghosting, and mura pattern smearing on the headset. It's interesting because I didn't seem to see those things mentioned in the "pro" reviews so I'm wondering if some of this is a calibration issue.

The only game I played so far, my first VR experience essentially is Kayak VR. I’ve been pretty blown away honestly, and honestly didn’t know what to expect.

What I’ll say is with this game I’m dripping sweat and won’t need to go to the gym. I played a good bit of the game, 3-4 hours, most of the races and no motion sickness so far. When you smash into a cliff side you do ‘feel’ it though and briefly get a bit of a motion feeling, but it passes by pretty quick.

I admit I wasn’t expecting the headset to get ‘that’ sweaty, I’m assuming most people have to wipe down theres. And it’s fine, but there is that. Also one of the Sense controllers already got a little scuffed with my arms spinning all over the place. Nothing too bad but I see this thing getting a lot of scuff marks based off first usage.

Pretty impressed with the visuals even though I have nothing to compare to. I was blown away by the new experience off the bat. I will say resolution looks good but not as ‘crisp’ as I thought it might be. This may vary from game to game though. I’ve not played anything else yet, Horizon is next up. It would be nice to play a game and not sweat balls next though 😆

Personally, I think the Pro reviewers are afraid to say some of these things for fear that Sony will take them off of the list to send them free review products.

Same, they just need to be the right way around or there's no charge. It's pretty obvious when they're on charge though as there's a light.

Good to hear most are enjoying PSVR2 overall so far here.

I wonder if Sony included a free demo disc with several PSVR2 games? I know there was a free Horizon VR demo game to test out.

I think the only demos are available digitally in the online store. I didn’t get a demo disc with mine.

And I’d echo the same experiences here. Much improved graphics compared to the PSVR. The graphics aren’t totally mind blowing though. It looks good but I too was noticing some aliasing for some element and distorting around the edges.

And really hoping for a 3D Blu-ray patch so I can watch my discs with the improved resolution. Or at least a media player where I could play rips of them.

After 3 hours, things can start getting claustrophobic, I always tried to play in 60 minute bursts and then a 10 minute break.

The resolution issue sounds disappointing, on paper that should be a vast improvement with a far less noticeable screen door effect, sounds like it’s not the case.
With PSVR1 I was willing to overlook that for the sheer immersion, this however is more expensive and I will be more demanding.

VR, the first time you play it is mind blowing. To be honest, that doesn’t go away for quite some time, depending on the experience. Some games left me gobsmacked.

One reviewer on YouTube said he added an extension and it worked. I played a bit last night and had tracking problems with the hands while climbing on Horizon. I lost tracking a few times and once saw one hand below me. It didn't take long to get corrected though. Climbing on Oculus 2 does the same thing but I thought tracking would be much better on PSVR2. Horizon has you doing too much climbing if you ask me. I got sleepy and hit the hay after that. I also was amazed that graphics were not as sharp as I thought they would be. Regarding the charging unit, I agree with others that Sony's gizmo is a head scratcher. When you place the controllers on it for charging, they aren't in a stable situation. If someone happens to bump it, the controllers can easily loose connection and stop charging. The controller's contact points are simply touching the chargers points without anything to keep them from being unconnected. Look for a third party to top that bumble.

Sorry to hear there is still some jagged edges in some games, and some screen door effect with the pixels still visible. I think that will be unavoidable as Sony uses magnifying glasses to zoom in on the actual screen, magnifying the individual pixels of the 4K screen. In real life, if I get right next to a 4K screen, I can see the pixels too. So some pixels are expected for VR with 4K.
When screens no longer use Pixels is when that effect will disappear forever.

I need to learn how long these hand controllers take to charge, and how long each charge lasts.

Gran Turismo 7 with a driving rig in VR would be immersive for VR I bet. Although sitting in a chair could be cool too. I can imagine controlling the virtual steering wheel with the hand controller in the left hand, and the stick shift in the right hand. Hopefully the game allows options for those playing it. I'll hold off on GT7 due to its online only rental only requirement.

PS5 State of Play PSVR2 games. Looks like more shooting games. Ugh. Where is more original creativity for VR early out of the gate?
It's still early, so there will be time later in 2023.

Some Simulation game developers were asked if they'd port their games to PSVR2, but they said they'll hold off until it has a larger fanbase. We need the simulation game developers to add their games to PSVR2 asap IMO. I'd love to hop onto a tractor and cut the lawn in VR, like I did in the old days growing up every week. Or drive a big truck across country on the freeways in VR.
I'd also like a simulation bowling game in VR, that looks like you're actually holding the bowling ball, then walking up and rolling it like in real life. Where is a new PSVR2 bowling game?
And Sony Japan, please announce an Astrobot Missions upgrade of Astrobot's Playroom into VR too. The game packed in with PS5.

Still more hopeful games will hopefully be made for PSVR2 in late 2023, 2024.

I did hear the odds of Halflife Alyx are slim to none, unless Sony can pull off some kind of licensing deal miracle soon. Otherwise, it would've been a PSVR2 seller.

Apparently I lied that I wouldn't get to this yet lol. I actually finished Dragon Quest Treasures on Friday and just messed around with a low budget game until last night. Took me half an hour to set up. The charging station was actually the hardest part to figure out. Sucks this takes up the only USB C port and I tried it does NOT work through a hub (like OG PSVR) so you're stuck with it there.

I liked that it showed me the whole room in the setup, how do I quickly check when I'm playing, it's supposed to be able to do this right? I didn't like that PS button pauses the game, on PSVR if you held it down it brought up a menu that had some things but most importantly the time, and the game didn't stop. (just pushing it would bring you back to the home screen)

I am glad they finally solved the issue of light leaking through underneath!! I really hated that about PSVR, I could always see my hands out of the bottom of my eyes if I focused on it. It's a good thing too since you need the lights on in the room for this lol. But that will be good for my wasp problem. They won't be attracted to me now since it has no lights of it's own and they'll just go to the lamp. I never got stung while playing but I always worried about it. I have gotten stung inside by them.

You cannot play a non VR game with it with the VR controllers. I haven't checked with a dual sense though. I'll try that tonight. It let me launch a non vr game but then it was unresponsive to all controls.

My biggest problem was the play area. Every time I looked around or went to reach for the next grip while climbing I would get the red circle warning that I was outside of the play area. This was MASSIVELY annoying and immersion breaking. I got a tip on another forum to set the boundary sensitivity to low. I will try that. I liked on PSVR you could get up and walk around to look over edges or around corner and stuff. And you had to be out of the view of the camera to get a warning. I can't even reach up, while sitting, to climb without getting a warning that I'm out of the boundaries lol.

As for Horizon I have only killed 1 machine so far lol. It's cool Aloy was in this though. I hope there's more of her. there is apparently to physical version so now I wish I had gotten the bundle, uggh. I have also bought the kayak game which I will play after Horizon.

The room set up is so high tech vs. Quest 2 that it's worth showing that to folks also. It's very nice to look as its happening. It maps the floor, walls ceiling, furniture and every thing else in a high tech way. It's truly a next generation feature.

What is it with picking up axes, sticks and the like in VR? In Horizon for example, there is a gong and the thing you hit the gong with. Instead of being a solid item, it just flops around as you try to use. I always wondered why that is so.

I was pretty bummed last night after spending some time with the new PSVR 2

I had the PSVR 1 and when I got the PS5 I never got the part to make it play on it.

Yesterday afternoon when the package arrived I opened it all up and charged the two controllers. I also went and downloaded the demos that became available that day. The day before I loaded up Resident Evil Village and made sure I got the Ps5 version so I could play in PSVR 2 mode.

That night I moved my ottoman to make a space to play, I made a U shape with my couch and got going … this is where I had trouble

When I had it map out where I could play, I thought the map on the floor was the space where you could walk … so when I pressed ok to the map area , inside the U, it said I wouldn’t have enough space for most things.

I tried it again and made every available empty space on the floor a play area. It took that a little better and said I could only play standing or some thing. By this time I just wanted to play. So I exited and started up the Star Wars demo to get started…

It just didn’t feel right to me. It kinda looked like the PSVR1 and as cool as that is this wasn’t that much wow for me. I was kinda bummed. I messed with it but the controls didn’t move as smooth as I think it could. Stuff looked a little fuzzy and I don’t really know what it was.

I played the darts in the bar and walked and went outside to shoot some things.

I got kinda flustered and mapped it again saying I was sitting. This made a temp map and I tried the game smoke something. I messed with that and it was somewhat better. The graphics weren’t again a wow.

I decided to mess with it more the next day

Today I mapped it out new but decided to just make the play area over the couch and to the other side of the ottoman. This worked. I don’t need to walk in all the areas but my arms and hands need to be able to flow freely in that area.

So I tried Village and couldn’t get it to play in VR. It just wanted to play on the big screen and not even let me use the vr controllers. I knew something was wrong.

I Googled it and there is a VR patch that needs to be downloaded separately even though it said PS5 and had the PSVR icon on the game.

So…I had to search for the add on. It’s not in the VR area, and downloaded it

Once ready I started that and

BOOM

I was standing in a jail cell and it was crystal clear. I started saying WOW like the first time I put on the PSVR1. It was amazing. I walked around and did the turtoral. I just kept walking up to things and looking at them. Walls. Boxes. Amazing. I was in that room.!!!

I messed with that for a bit then put the Star Wars demo back on and yea. I don’t know what was wrong the day before but this looked way better. Felt better.. I played all the to until they wanted me to buy it.

Looked and felt so rad.

I'm still getting used to the controllers. Those will take a while. But you can do so much more than the wands from the PSVR1.

I also was getting some motion sickness from the PSVR1 at times. I have not felt that here yet..

So I’m very happy to have this and will keep updating here when I find or feel something cool.

I'm sending mine back.
I think I need another 10 years for VR to really wow me.

I sold my PSVR1 after a year cause there were too few games that I really liked and the graphics were just a bit too blurry and crappy for me.
I had huge expectations for PSVR2 but after about 2 hours of play (RE5 & Horizon) I feel like it's still not where I want it to be.
It's a good upgrade over PSVR1 graphics but honestly not nearly as big as I anticipated.
Horizon especially was a bummer. The textures are blury, looking into the distance (which is what you do a lot) is rather ugly with how low-res and foggy everything becomes.
Tracking of the controllers never feels good - you climb a lot and I feel like my on-screen hands always twist and turn in wrong directions after a few moves.
The arrow-shooting is also quite awkward. I guess I prefer a controller after all.

I think VR enthusiasts that loved VR1 will be very happy with this, but people that also struggled with VR1 due to low graphic fidelity and the Mura effect, might be underwhelmed with PSVR2.
Maybe I would keep it, if it was 300€ but for 600, there's too little (doesn't help that there's no new games coming that I'd be interested in).

I don't understand this part. I have my Sony charging station plugged in the wall in a corner. The Sense controllers sit on it. Simple as?

I think I need another 10 years for VR to really wow me.

Experienced VR enthusiasts who own a bunch of headsets on the high end and low end seem very happy with the headset as well. I guess will be down to the individual and their expectations.

I've one question to people with PSVR2. Should the image be sharp/crisp like it would on a TV screen almost? Because it looks muddier to me, still impressive but definitely not HD looking, I'd almost like to say 1080p or less. But the res is definitely HD according to its spec & literally no one has mentioned that in any review/impression anywhere I've seen.

I've wiped lenses down and done the obvious and the various eye set-up & calibrations. My eyesight is pretty decent, though I have glasses I never wear to sharpen things slightly but with no difference to the picture I'm seeing if I put those on. Is the image just meant to be a little low res looking? Trouble is I don't know anyone else with PSVR2 or a VR headset, and have no previous headset to compare to.
