Default X-Files (series) coming to Blu in ... I want to believe

Canada pre-orders:

The X-Files: Seasons 1-9 Collection Blu-ray

Individual seasons are also being released on the same date. Ex:

The X-Files: Season 1 Blu-ray

A number of our industry sources are now telling us that Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is planning (and in fact may already be gearing up to) release their classic TV series The X-Files on Blu-ray. As fans will already be aware, the first four seasons of the show were produced in 4x3 format, like many TV programs of its era. The series then went to a 16x9 widescreen format for the remainder of its run, as anamorphic widescreen displays were starting to become common. The entire show was still broadcast in standard definition – not actual high-definition – and the visual effects and post-production were finished in SD. (Note that the first actual HD broadcast on Fox was for the 2004 NFL season, while X-Files ended its run in 2002.) Our sources say Fox has likely decided to “rebuild” the seasons in high-definition, in much the same way that CBS has done with Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Provided all the original camera negative has been properly stored and archived, it’ll presumably be an easier task as the show featured fewer and less elaborate visual effects.

This wouldn’t be the first time Fox has upgraded a show to Blu-ray: They did something roughly similar with Firefly on Blu-ray back in 2008, although to be fair all of the show’s visual effects were upconverted to HD rather than re-rendered in actual high-definition to save costs.

If all goes well, we’re told the first seasons of The X-Files could appear on BD sometime in late 2013. We’ll post additional updates as they come in. Stay tuned…

My initial reaction as well

I recently began watching the series, and have 1-5 of the original digipak DVD sets. Luckily I didn't spend too much on them (around $15 a season).

I might even be keeping them, depending on what content gets ported over to the blu-rays.

If the price is right, I'd be down for a complete series boxset. But I'm not shelling out for individual seasons.

Outstanding news! I'd be in for a complete series too if Fox ends up pulling this off.

Very surprising news coming from FOX. They can count on my fiscal support.

I liked what I was able to catch on TV of The X-Files, so I might buy this. Hopefully, if they still hold the rights, they'll do this with Buffy!

Nothing has come close, not even Fringe. My favorite TV series of all time. Better start preparing to sell off my complete DVD collection.

Awesome news! This is one I've really been waiting for. One of my favorite shows by far. All of the seasons are free on Amazon Prime right now and I just started Season 1 as a matter of fact. Quite a coincidence and very cool news.

I hope I'm wrong, but I reckon these are going to be really expensive. I remember paying £80 a season on VHS , and then binning them when I upgraded to DVD (which were half the price, I might add). Do I want to triple dip.

You bet your ass I will.

I've been going through the entire series on Netflix for the better part of 3 years now and I'm finally on Season 8. I love the show, but I can't really imagine going through all of it again. If anything, I'd be up for a BD Mythology set, like they did on DVD

One of my favorite shows off all time as many of you have already said. Even the Doggett/Reyes years grew on me over time. I've owned both the "Official" Chinese crap-quality knock-offs as well as the really Official US releases on DVD and will triple dip in a second. I hope this news is true.

I Want to Believe ....

Youre going to be waiting a LONG time then. This isnt coming out in one big set right away like Friends. Theyre doing work on each season and releasing them, like Star Trek. So being a ten season show, you wont be seeing a complete set for quite a while.

Such great news...started watching it last year and this is partly the reason I didn't plan on buying any DVD sets.
