6 and 7 are two of my favorite seasons, 8 and 9 I struggle to get through in re-watches (currently half way through season 6 this years re-watch so fast approaching them!).

Just release them on blu already...

I would definitely agree with that. 7 has some good episodes (I love XCOPS!) but a lot of rather painful ones. 8 was a superb return to form IMHO and 9 was just... there.

These screencaps look amazing! I really hope a Blu Ray release is in the works. It would be a waste not to after all the effort thats been put into remastering the series.

I love X-Cops as well and while I did really enjoy Season 7 I do agree, it was very nice to see Season 8 get back true to form.

(...as seen on my Pronto remote when browsing for a disc to play.)

I agree. I really enjoyed a few episodes from season 7, but overall it was lacking. Season 8 was much better in terms of consistent quality and tone. The writers had to be back on their game without David Duchovny, the writing was better, Robert Patrick did a great job, and the episodes were much creepier than the previous season.

Same here. Bad Blood is another. Maybe it's because the mythology episodes all "go together," but when I try to think of individual episodes that I love, they always end up being MOTW episodes, and more humorous episodes.

Several comments re: some recent posts:

I never thought that the X-files: Fight the Future film (1998) was that comedic in tone; sure, there were some funny lines (i.e., Mulder being Mulder), but overall I felt it was very serious & gripping; the scene with the building being destroyed (with the actor who was later on the Lost TV series), the aliens, etc. was all very well-done.

Do some fans really consider the Post-Modern Prometheus episode comedic?! I thought it was fairly sad, especially as it referenced the depressing '80's film Mask...

IMHO, Seasons 8 & 9 get a bad rap because of the absense of Mulder
[Show spoiler](until the final episode of S9, IIRC)
and the general (though not complete) absense of Scully. Once I got past the fact that the bad Terminator from T2 (Robert Patrick) was on the show, I really enjoyed this - Patrick brought a completely different vibe/tone to the series, and Gish was also great. In fact, I would have to say that Seasons 8 & 9 produced some of the best episodes of the series...

I also think S7 was the worst season of the series.

Fox must be aware of the borderline rabid fanbase for this show and its quest for news regarding the blu ray upgrade. I dont believe they are not aware of threads and discussions like this and the constant questions posed by the shows fans. This is what is actually becoming annoying, would it really kill them just to throw a bit of info out there as to the bluray status? A simple "It is coming, maybe next year" or a "dont hold your breath" would suffice at this point.

I mean this could be announced tomorrow.......or never. Would it kill Fox just to clue the shows fanbase (and the ones who will be plucking up the cash) into what their plans are for The X Files on blu ray?

FOX themselves probably don't know. BD releases can move quite quickly from 'no-plans' to 'pre-orders', we've had a few titles turnaround really fast this year.

Well, I've tried to clue Fox in on their Twitter accounts (@FoxHomeEnt @20thFoxCC) about this forum. Also, I've tweeted several different times about wanting The X-Files released on blu-ray. They never have responded to me though. Who knows what their plans are for this series?

I'm a massive advocate of Doggett & Reyes - I was in danger of becoming very irritated by Duchovny so the slight change in direction was welcome to me and I really really wish they done at least one more season.
I hate the sentence "I liked The X-Files up until Mulder left, then it was bad" - Mulder wasn't The X-Files!!!!

He was for me, well, at least a very big part of it. The hunt for his sister was the entire reason he pursued X-Files cases. In my opinion, even if Duchovny had stayed on throughout seasons 8 and 9, the show had already started to tank in season 7 anyway.

Saying that, there are some cracking episodes in the last two seasons, they pale in comparison to the earlier seasons though.

I have to agree that The X Files without Mulder (permanently) felt pretty hollow to me. They just about got away with it in season 8 not just due to stronger scripts but also because you knew he was coming back; there really was a story arc that resulted in his return. Season 9, you knew he was gone for good, making the whole "on the run" thing seem stupid and pointless, since you knew he wasn't coming back anyway. If they'd wanted a "new era" they should have cut Scully at the end of series 8 and let them both go off together, with Doggett and Reyes becoming the focus. The insistence on keeping Scully around and keeping the focus on a character who wasn't coming back was a mistake IMHO.

Yup I've said it before it's either a new generation of X Files or it's not, they needed to pick one. It's like in Scrubs where JD had a big send off end of season, then the suits obviously worried about Scrubs standing on it's own two feet without him so he was shoe horned back for a while, so it never was new fresh start as the same with X Files it had one foot in the past.

The stuff in Season 8 and 9 around Mulder and Scully is so weak and scattershot it would have been better to minimize it to nothing and take it fully in the new direction.

In principal, I understand and even would typically agree with what you're saying but, in the case of the X-Files, I disagree. I think keeping Scully around really made the overall show feel more like Scully's journey, which I found incredibly interesting since there weren't many strong female leads in genre works on television who were allowed to have genuine arcs across the series. It's also interesting because Mulder is the seeming original anchor of the show (which is why it's necessary to believe he's coming back). If Scully had just left when Mulder did, I think we would have had a season that barely seemed like the X-Files tacked on to the end of eight seasons that did. To me, allowing Scully some "time to herself" to anchor the final couple seasons is what elevates the show even higher than where it was at otherwise. That's what made it feel clear, from an overall series perspective, that the X-Files in that iteration was fully Mulder and Scully. Not just Mulder and, oh yeah, Scully's around, too...and she's important.

Which I feel is perfect because, outside of the teaser, the show opens with Scully. And she's the one who has a genuine arc where she notably changes from beginning to end.

It's a crisis of faith, which is why the film is called "I Want To Believe." Lots of people have a settled ideology which gets shaken. Even Mulder had his doubts when he wondered if the notion of the conspiracy was the conspiracy and there was no greater truth despite what he'd seen.

I understand what they were going for but it makes it no less annoying. It's equally as eye rolling as Mulder denying everything he has seen after half an hour with Michael Kritschgau.

Though I thought Anderson's portrayal in IWTB was all round "off", Scully had lightened up a lot through last four Seasons then goes back to cold scientist for IWTB. You'd have thought she'd use that smile (that she learned to master in Season Six) for her bed side manner more in her new profession.

edit: Man I forget the stuff she went through with her birth of William and the Season 9 finale stuff. Thin line between crisis of faith and just being numb for sake of the plot. Joe Harris has been more respectful in Season 10 IMO (well apart from forgetting that Scully can speak German).

Last edited by sheldo; 09-09-2014 at 03:15 PM. Reason: Seasons 8 & 9 really happened didnt it...
