No, I didn’t see much film grain at all in the recent Director’s Cut release. It looked similar to the restoration of Phantasm in that regard.

Here's grain for ya. The original release does have less.

Yeah, I'm still a bit bemused. Maybe 'smooth' means something else in Jlouis' neck of the woods?

I certainly don't think that the encode itself is perfect, there's a bit of banding in the extremes of colour saturation & black handling but it's still a fine effort in terms of the transfer at a source level.

Idk, the grain is there but to me it’s not as finely detailed as I’d been led to believe. I don’t know how else to describe it, but the grain structure isn’t fine and we’ll defined, it looks more soft, subdued and filtered. Maybe it’s just the film stock used? Based upon all the glowing reviews, I expected a gorgeously detailed image and I didn’t see that. I watched the film on my 65” Samsung 4K TV so I don’t know if that made a difference. Maybe I just need those glasses my eye doctor keeps suggesting.

That is a complete unknown.

I would assume if they're going back to the original elements and they don't f anything up, it will look (and sound) better than ever before.

More than likely yes. I believe the master they used for the original Blu-ray was a DVD era master. If all goes well this new 4K version will blow the old one out of the water, especially if they add Dolby Vision. This is one of my favorite movies ever and am super excited to buy this again, I’ve bought it on nearly every format throughout the years. Even the audio will be a major upgrade on this new one

Let us cross our fingers.

I'm damn eager for this release. I'm going to close and lock my windows and doors to insure I don't kill small animals when I start singing.

It's a guilty pleasure of mine since I learned of all kinds of "naughty" words and adult themes from this movie and the music soundtrack when I was a little kid at the time of its initial release. I would say Olivia Newton John made me feel kinda funny.

Oh, and it does have some great tunes throughout.

Grease is the word!!

Every high school production I've ever seen writes out the pregnancy subplot. I always thought it was hilarious because of how suggestive the entire movie is. LOL

Reports that iTunes now has the remastered version available, and it includes the original 1978 Paramount logo.

Well Geoff, there was one possibility many overlooked: the opportunity in the digital era to make Pepsi happy at long last. 40 years late, but here you have it...

The comp job is actually pretty solid, although I think Lorenzo Lamas gets his nose cut off for a few frames. But otherwise it looks pretty clean when people walk through it.

Couple of other notes... color timing is cooler in some shots. My camera is not doing a great job, because the BD (bottom) doesn't look quite that warm -- but this illustrates the difference...

The sky is clearly different here -- don't freak out, it doesn't look nearly this green, blame my camera. Blue really pops in most shots (note Kenickie's shirt) -- BD on bottom.

The overall image is brighter than the BD (bottom), looking forward to seeing the HDR version...

No one should judge the overall PQ by these photos. The iTunes stream is crap. Film grain is still present, and in some night shots is fairly prominent (no T2 style scrub job here.) All things considered, I'm very optimistic about the upcoming UHD.

Yep, good call for the folks who wondered about replacing the Coke marketing with a Pepsi mural, and it proves that the marketing agreements for the film still have resonance today. The colour is exactly what I noticed about that trailer I posted before, it looks so much more vibrant than the existing BD. EEEEEEEEEEEEK!

Kleiser finally did something about the blurring. That's great since he passed it up the last time he approved it.

Now cue the purists demanding the original blurring.

Glad they did something about the blurring. I wonder why they just didn’t go back to the Coke sign though. Unless Coke wouldn’t allow them too or were asking a lot of money.
