Looking at YouTube trailers is pretty pointless for checking detail because either through compression and most likely unavoidable DNR, grain simply doesn't display well on YT.
Makes about as much sense as someone saying my medium film scans look blurry after I upload my 12K scan to Facebook and it gets compressed to shit automatically. But you can use it for framing and general color timing and that looks nice to my eyes. I'll have to wait for screenshots or trusted reviews before rendering judgment. |

Colours are very blatantly much more saturated, richer and more vibrant. That aspect makes me think this is the new transfer that's being used in this trailer. Markedly different to what's available currently, like you say. The rest you can't really tell from a YT trailer. A Silence of the Lambs 4k trailer that I saw via the BFI site on FB showed no sign of grain either, but as we know, there's plenty in the final disc product from Criterion.

Depends on the source material, as well as what resolution the video is set as on playback, as even upscaled 1080p will look better on youtube when played back as "4K" than 1080p video played back at 1080p. The regular 1080p option on youtube is horrendously compressed and bit-starved compared to the source files, you'd need to get the "4K" levels of bitrate and compression to get close to what the original uploaded files looks like. Unless there's a "4K" option for playback, I wouldn't start to make any significant remarks regarding grain, DNR or overall sharpness based on a youtube video. Color is different, though chroma resolution does matter there somewhat, however this movie will be released with HDR anyway, which youtube hasn't really gotten the hang of yet.
The easiest way to see youtube's compression in action is to look at foliage, especially with a moving camera, sometimes I can barely tell what I'm looking at it's so bad. The unfortunate truth about youtube's quality is that pretty much any video will benefit from upscaling to "cheat" the system into giving it more bitrate and less compression. That trailer video does look very DNR'd indeed, but how representative it'll be of the new transfer is anyone's guess. Last edited by Fendergopher; 03-10-2018 at 01:34 PM. |

Great? I never contested that the trailer looks full of grain or anything, I just don't think it's a good indicator for how the final UHD is going to look, youtube should at this point be well known for having terrible video compression.
Anyway, unless whoever made the trailer informs us, there's also no way of knowing if the video used for the trailer is based on the UHD master, the BD master, or something entirely unique for the trailer. |

I don't think studios are bothering to provide new footage for new trailers. For example, Blade Runner: The Final Cut and the Nolan Collection both used clips from previous trailers instead of remastered footage for their 4K announcement trailers.
Dunno if that trailer is representative of how this movie has looked before, but maybe that's the look they went for on the standard Blu-ray and hopefully we get less filtering on the UHD disc. Paramount has been on a streak of UHD perfection since Transformers, so I'm optimistic that whatever we get will be great. |

It's the colour that caught my eye, otherwise I wouldn't have even bothered posting the link to the trailer. I've never seen it look as lush as that on VHS, LD, DVD and now Blu-ray so they definitely did something to it for that trailer, rather than just chucking a few clips from the Blu-ray into their edit timeline.
But yes, if they can give Tomb Raider - ****ing Tomb Raider - a respectful new 4K transfer along with BD-only stuff like the 40th anniversary remaster of Saturday Night Beaver then I don't see why they'd drop the ball on Grease. If they do, and it's a BIG "if", then it'll be because of the director wanting it to be DNR'ed to shit. We can only hope that Randal Kleiser has more taste than that ![]() |
