For those that don't know, the RED ONE is a HD digital camera capable of 4k lines of resolution roughly equal to that of film.
The big difference is the cost. At 17K it's cheaper than renting a film camera and cheaper than other HD cameras of lower quality. So what are your thoughts? Peter Jackson and Steven Soderbergh both highly praise and use the camera. Do you think this is the future? |

I think its the future becasue before there were HD cameras Robert Rodriguez shot Once Upon A Time In Mexico in a Digital Camera and he shot a couple other movies with it so i could see him using it in the future, and other directers will pick up on it, and its cheaper for them!

It's a great camera, but there is still a place for film too. It's also worth noting that the 17k is just for the body. Lenses and accessories cost more, but yeah it's still way cheaper than processing 16 or 35mm.

Hope it's not too off topic, but I think the Red Scarlet is also a wave of the future. It shoots 3K for under $3,000. That can open doors for a many of young film makers. Of course, a lot of it will be crap, but it's still cool.

It's impressive to say the least. The amount of gadgets, accessories, lenses, etc. is also insane. This is what i'll buy when the day comes. Of course that could be 10 years from now, but as an "aspiring" filmaker with no financial backers, you have little else to choose from. Film is not really an option.

I've heard of some folks from ad agencies having to re-tool most things because Avid doesn't like Red. They've had to go to FCP because Avid takes them days to just get the footage imported. Logan |

I won't participate in the poll.
Using film, Red or Fusion 3D is not an either/or decision. Film and Red are 2D formats but a single stream from Fusion is also 2D. Film have been used to do 3D before (very expensive) and who's to say that the Red CCDs can't be incorporated into the Fusion 3D? These tools help make storytelling better. These tools also evolve to be better. Quote:
