Some movies just work better in black and white.

I had the misfortune of watching CASABLANCA in colour once. It was well done, not one of these AI-coloured abominations, but still, it completely changed the tone and mood of the film.

For me the same is true with NIGHTMARE ALLEY. The original gets the atmosphere absolutely spot on. The newer adaptation is slick af, but it creates a different vibe completely.

Both good, but prefer the original adaptation.

The French blu Violence et Passion has more vibrant colours than my Eureka of Visconti's Conversation Piece. You couldn't imagine two more dissimilar titles for the same movie! I think Gaumont's BD50 of Viva Maria! improves upon Kino Lorber's BD25. But it's Un Carnet de Bal I'm most looking forward to.

Hadn’t heard of this one before buying it, but thought this was pretty good - felt a bit like Hammer doing a Wuxia remake of Temple of Doom.
Loved the dark and creepy set design, really atmospheric, and some of the action/fight scenes were pretty intense.

A slightly disappointing lack of many extras (just a commentary and a short archival interview with Tsui Hark), but PQ was generally rather good.

I enjoyed this. I'm not a massive fan of post-Endgame MCU, and I wasn't overly enamoured with RAGNAROK, but I'm a big fan of the Mighty Thor storyline from the comics and I thought that element worked very well in the movie. Portman was great, as was Christian Bale as Gorr. If this was the final chapter in MCU Thor then I'm fine with that, but personally I'm hoping for one more....

Having rewatched PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK a few weeks ago it's clear to see the influence that that movie had over Sofia Coppola's film. The dreamy photography and storytelling is beautifully constructed and works just as effectively here as it does in Picnic. As mentioned in the 4K thread, the Studio Canal disc offers a very pleasing presentation for the most part but comes completely off the rails during the closing credits for some reason. Not a problem for me as I couldn't care less re credits, but still, a shame they couldn't keep it together for that final few moments of the presentation.

After watching Apple TV+'s Slow Horses last week we were in the mood for some classic-era Gary Oldman. Que ROMEO IS BLEEDING. Oldman is perfectly 90s Oldman, and the wider cast of Lena Olin, Juliette Lewis, Roy Scheider and Will Patton excel. Olin in particular treads the fine line between gorgeous femme fatale and demented psychopath perfectly. The PQ is ok without being outstanding, a 3-3.5/5 IMO.

This might be the only sex comedy I've seen that is actually funny. Warning - at times it's pretty close to pornography.

Both films back to back. What an epic.

We were in the mood for a swashbuckling adventure, so we were gonna go with pirates of Caribbean, but we noticed this on Sky Cinema uhd section. Not seen it in years, what good fun but a tad too long.

Matrix and reloaded back to back, while the first one is near perfect reloaded focused more on trying to repeat the action sequences which made the first one so successful that it’s story line suffered which is a shame as it could been so good.

Re-watched: Not losing relevance anytime soon

The scenes with Batty and particularly the scene where Batty meets his maker are thrilling for their ideas and not just their action. Batty's rooftop soliloquy gets attention but there are other piercing lines he delivers; "Not very sporting to fire on an unarmed opponent. I thought you were supposed to be good. Aren't you the "good" man? C'mon, Deckard. Show me what you're made of" and "That's the spirit!". These lines are focused on the subject of man's inhumanity to man and why each human life is so f***ing precious. The macro and the micro.

The movie is about the Frankenstein myth for sure but it's a devastating slavery parable too. Batty and his crew the escaped slaves and Deckard, the utterly compromised lowly slave-catcher working for the plantation. This movie does not pull a single punch.
[Show spoiler]Deckard, the noir tragic hero, has a job that looks an awful lot like assassinating innocent women when they're trying to flee from him. And this guy's our hero? This movie has guts and then some. Deckard's only redeeming quality, he's the gunman desperate to hang up his holster because he's had a bellyful of killing; the quintessential American hero, emigrated from the endless cycle of killing on the European continent, only to be dragged right back into it on the north American one. The shakes. He gets 'em bad, they're part of the business, he tells Rachael before she reminds him she's not in the slave trade. She IS the slave trade. Who wouldn't get the shakes?

and

I saw an interview with Alex Garland after The Beach was released and I thought he sounded terrible but a few years later the extras for ex_machina show what a decent, thoughtful man he is. I really loved this film. It's a great three hander. The tension builds beautifully and the surprises in the ending were very human in that events could easily have worked out differently: This was the ending, this one time, in this one set of circumstances. That's great to have in a story that's playing out in real life as we speak, that of AI, where no one knows where it's headed but that it's going to profoundly affect us all.

Re-watch on Blu-Ray. Something about this movie is very alluring to me. I'm pretty sure it's mostly the architecture shots.

A lot of the dialogue and acting I find a bit bizarre, but then it's explained why those characters are having trouble expressing themselves at first, and then it makes sense, but I've already registered it as something that doesn't fully work from the start so it's kind of too late. Maybe one day on a future rewatch it will open up to me fully.

I kind of like the music at times, but at other times it feels a bit like YouTube Library music - fine for a video, not really for a feature film.

Bare bones disc, only has a short printed interview accompanying it.
