Proving ownership might be difficult with the winding down of Laurel and the subsequent aquisition of rights and materials etc. Plus the police probably don't care. Knowing RR's reputation I should imagine lawyers are involved but things move slowly.

I hope RR’s all over them like a cheap suit. No way they should get away with that outrageous bullshit.

A similar thing happened to Roddy McDowell, who made himself less popular by snitching on all his film-collecting mates.

there's also the argument that this will keep people with rare film prints from coming forward for fear of prosecution.

This is kind of a special case, where this unique film print is known to have actually been stolen.

If it was reported stolen whenever it disappeared, maybe, but if they only report the theft now, there would be at least some burden of proof on them to prove that it was stolen in the first place. Possession presumes ownership absent evidence to the contrary (and even though testimony is a kind of evidence, it's rarely sufficient evidence in and of itself). It's possible their lawyers are aware of more details of the circumstances than the general public, and presumably they know the local applicable laws, which could explain why they aren't pursuing legal methods to reclaim it.

I wasn't fully referring to extended cuts in general, more so that DVD licences were a decent gravy train for rights holders.

But we did have a huge boom of extended cuts driving sales with DVD.

The truth is there are many film collectors with many rare film prints that will never come forward with details of what they have and things like this never have to happen in the first place because why would directors and film studios only print 1 copy of a film or not take copies of negatives? If they weren't so penny pinching in the first place none of this stuff would happen, there would be multiple copies of everything. It's like a producer or a singer making songs and not taking a copy of them home at the end of the day or saving everything they recorded. The mind boggles.

How funny would it be if this print was like Night Of The Living Dead and didn't have any copyright details on the print lol. Public domain first cut of Martin.

Worst case scenario: It's not Martin

Best case scenario: It's Magnificent Ambersons
Orson Welles is all very well but I think you'll find best case scenario is Power of the Daleks.

I agree. I hope someone is able to acquire it that'll do the right thing and get it released by Arrow or Second Sight or someone(and make sure to make a digital scan of the print) vs hoarding it all for themselves and asking too much money for it.

I was willing to pay 2000-3000 for it as it's estimated at. But after placing a couple bids and it's now at 2,750. I think whomever the high bidder is has placed a pretty big bid on it. Let's hope it's a distributor and not a greedy scammer that'll hold it hostage.

That's insane. I was hoping we'd finally get an official release date from Second Sight when I saw the thread bump. This thread is already 3 years old by now...

I don't see what's inherently wrong about putting it up for auction - it's not like it's particularly unusual for art or important artefacts of any sort to be put through this process. If anything, it fetching a decent price would (hopefully!) suggest that it is someone with interest in exploiting it commercially rather than letting it rot. Perhaps even a joint bid by different institutions. Pure speculation though.
