Man, I went to look for this a couple weeks ago on VS's website and it was gone. No listing. So I was like "oh no, I took too long, it's OOP"

Ebay prices were already inflated, but I took a chance on an Amazon one from third party seller OCN Distribution, which I guess is a sister company of VS.

VS's site came back up while I was waiting for it to ship, and the listing is suddenly back with a few copies available. But I was waiting for this copy to arrive before I queued up another order since I couldn't cancel.

It arrived in a VS box, but no slipcover. Got a partial refund, which saves me the trouble of getting it to the post office and then trying to get return shipping paid for.

But luckily it was still up on VS, still in stock, listed as Limited Slipcover Edition, and I used my code from the Showgirls thing for an extra $5 off.

I'll probably try to flip this slipless one and even it all out. Criterion sale has me spread thin enough as it is.

Ok, aside from the stupid slipcover story, I watched this yesterday and it's fantastic. Looks amazing, sounds great. Everything you can want from a piece of film from this era. Color and grain right in the goldilocks zone. And it's just a great horror movie. I don't think I've ever actually gotten to sit down and watch this movie proper, and just saw bits and pieces on TV, only getting the gist of the Amityville premise.

There is no way I would have gotten as much from James Brolin's performance and the whole aesthetic of this movie, in any other level of fidelity. His eyes man, he looks so unwell from the get go and just keeps getting worse haha. I felt every annoyance and nauseating feeling the whole way through.

Late to the party, but nice work VS. Probably tied for Freeway as my favorite UHD presentation from them, just in terms of look.

Amazon doesn't sell VS titles with slipcovers. The only non-direct retailer to get them are indies like Orbit, Diabolik, Grindhouse, etc.

Haven't seen this movie since I was probably younger than 10. I am SO glad I picked up this 4K. The restoration was great and the movie blew me away. I remembered liking it, but I was shocked at how incredible Brolin's performance was, how hauntingly beautiful the score was, and how genuinely creepy the movie was. I wouldn't be surprised if I give this another watch before the Halloween season ends.

I remember seeing a big ad for this on a billboard next to my local 7 Eleven convenience store back in the summer of '79.

I can only imagine how cool that was!

Even though I hadn't seen it in so long, the house's windows and the bleeding walls stayed in my memory. Just a few years back when I lived in Florida, there was a house with those same windows right next to my apartment complex. Always made me think of this.

Yeah my best friend Darrell and I speculated on what the movie was about while eating our Slim Jims and drinking Pepsi. We were 11 and 12 respectively, and it was a Saturday ritual to walk to the 7 Eleven in Orlando (D's mom was a manager) and get some snacks. God I miss those days...and I miss my friend, too (he died last year at only 54 ).

I still can't believe they offered no reverse cover of an original promo poster. What they gave was very stoopid

The absence of the original poster on the reverse sleeve is sort of perplexing in such a nice package. It’s also not typical of a VS release, they almost always offer the original poster art on the reverse. I wonder if there was some issue around using the image. That said, it’s a fantastic release, beautiful print. Made me appreciate the film in a new way. It’s also down to 44 copies, so soon to be completely out of print.

It won’t be completely out of print, they’re just low in stock but once that sells out I’ll be restocked. VS also gives notice when titles are going OOP.
