Exclamation Ps3 Slim Harddrive Swap With Sony Vaio Vgc-lt35e Harddrive

Ok i need an expert here. I just bought the ps3 slim but 120 gigs isnt cutting it as i want to download ALOT of ps2 and dreamcast games when they come out on psn. I know ps3's are made to be able to upgrade hdrives but would i be able to switch it?

My Sony Vaio VGC-LT35E has 2 320gb hdd which equal 640gb harddrive. I want to know if i can take out one of those 320gb hdd from my Sony Vaio VGC-LT35E, then put that hd in the ps3 slim to replace that 120, then take that 120 and put it in the Sony Vaio VGC-LT35E. Can this be done? Will it work without anything getting messed up?

Please help, thanks

Ok this is what my vgc-lt35e has for a hd, i just looked it up and it says: Two 320GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drives

So ur saying i can take out ONE of those TWO 320gb 7200 sata harddrives and put it IN the ps3 SLIM and take the 120 ps3 slim hard drive and put that in the computer next to the other 320gb?

I was trying to find the spec for the slim harddrive to see if it's a 7200 like the 320 is. N E 1?????? Cause i need memory but i don't want to mess anything up and honestly i don't have the cash to burn buying one and besides, my computer has WAY too much hdd, i don't need 640. Will it work?

Just a thought, but how bout wait for some conformation on the whole PS2/Dreamcast thing, for now its just rumors, and even then it could be some whole lotta BS.

500GB should do it, and you could just wait till then!

Man i just tried it and it doesn't fit. The computers 320 is HUGE compared to the ps3's little hard drive.

How many games u think this 120 can hold? Well 109 it says really. I want to download about 15 ps1 games on psn right now but then if i spend all that money via psn card and download all of that, then i will be stuck if i upgrade it in the future cause then i loose all those downloads once i swap the hdrives.

I did it like u said and it was a problem. THis 7200 sata 320 was a HUGE harddrive compared to the small ps3 hdd....didn't even fit either way. Where can i get a 500 hd that will fit this slim?

Any 2.5" hard drive should be able to fit in the PS3 Slim. I don't know why a certain 2.5" hard drive would fit and another one wouldn't. Scope out newegg.com.. They have a large selection of 2.5" hard drives. Operator error is a MF

That sony shows to be a all in one desk top, you need a laptop hard drive ie 2.5" drive. Sounds like you have a 3.5" hard drive. So you have to pony up some cash or just wait. Hard drives are getting cheaper every day and by the time the psn releases the games they should be even cheaper.

Considering the Sony Vaio VGC-LT35E is a desktop, I'm not surprised the HDD did not fit. You need a 2.5" laptop HDD.

Good luck!

This would make total sense lol. Does anyone know if i can fit 15 ps1 games on this slim? Hey i read that ps2 slim IS backward compatible with PS1 games. Also, that ps3 slim....it lets u make ps2 memory card in it's system the same way the older b/c models did PLUS i even downloaded the ps2 b/c download file from psn and it took that too. Isn't that weird that it plays ps1 games since that system also used the emotion engine.

Anyone know how many games i could fit via psn download? ALSO, i download games now to play, then later on i swap the hard drive, do i loose all those downloads? How would it transfer the games? I know i can transfer the game SAVES via usb but i can't transfer the games right? I don't want to pay for all those games and loose them.....talk to me my fellow experts.

I was looking this one up, it's around 120 new. Is there a cheaper version of this exact same one, like i saw a western digital but it said 8mb instead of 16 but it was 500, don't know the difference but i saw the western namebrand being a cheaper price. What's the difference?

I went to two computer stores today to buy the same exact one u have and both stores said that if i put that 7200, it will make the ps3 very hot as it's too much and will cause more heat. He said i have to get teh 5400. U sure u typed the right thing above it being 7200 instead of 5400?

Again, does ANYONE have an IDEA of how many PS1 psn games can the 120 hold? I want to download 15, u think that is enough?

Again, does ANYONE know what were to happen if i download the 25 games, then later on go with a 320 or 500gig harddrive upgrade, if i will have to pay to download them AGAIN on the new harddrive or will i be able to transfer the games to the new hard drive cause usb flash or memory cards won't hold those games, only the saves. I tried looking for this info on the sony site but they don't say anything.

Thanks.

This is correct. PS3 uses a 2.5" SATA hard drive @ 5400 RPMs.

You can put a 7200 RPM drive in it. Some people say the performance gain is negligible, though.

When possible, try to use a 9.5mm height SATA drive. I've heard of people putting 12.5mm high drives in a PS3, but it's either a cramped fit or they had to use a different railing.

I have 400gb drives in both my PS3 Slim and my Fatty. They're 5400 RPM Western Digitals and work great.

ZipZoomFly.com, a tech site I buy from often, has a good deal on a 320gb drive right now. It's $69.99 with free shipping, but you get 3% Bing cashback (if you're a Bing member, which is free) and a $15 rebate, bringing the net price down to $52.89.

Also, if you REALLY want to max out the size in your PS3, Western Digital just released a new 640gb 2.5" SATA drive (9.5mm height). Amazon has it for $149. Model # WD6400BEVT.

The Seagate 500GB 7200.4 SATA 7200RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" Laptop HDD works fine, the 7,200rpm isn't required for the PS3 as I didn't note much speed difference so you could save money opting for a 5,400rpm 500gig HDD. I simply opted for the 7,200rpm version in case I use this drive for something else down the line.

I never used Western Digital before so I wouldn't know the difference besides 2 different brands.

You may want to try this hard drive:

Seagate Momentus (ST9500325AS) 500GB 5400.6 SATA 5400RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" Laptop HDD

Of course I am pretty sure after all I paid more money for it than the 5400 RPM drive. 7200RPM drives these days DO NOT go any hotter than 5400RPM's. There was a post on BLU-RAY.com before comparing 5400 and 7200RPM drive, you may want to search for it.
