This Island Earth is a film that very desperately needs a new scan after the crappy German releases: even more so than many other masters from Universal they've got carried away with the DNR and smoothed all the detail out of some shots, flattening the depth in many scenes. Even in some (but not all) close-ups of hands no-one seems to have any fingerprints while their faces have all been Botoxed.

This Island Earth, been hoping for an announcement for this one a long time now ! Really hoping for an excellent transfer for this one, it's one of my absolute favorite 50'S sci-fi films. DAY ONE all the way ! This also convinces me that we will be seeing an announcement for Monster on the Campus from Scream this year, hopefully sooner that later !

There are actually some pretty fantastic effects shots in the full film. MST cut most of them out, probably to make it seem "cheesier" than it was. I always felt it was a very poor choice to use This Island Earth for the MST3k movie. It's actually a fairly decent sci-fi film. Not as good as War of the Worlds or Forbidden Planet, but it still deserves some respect.

Think I am going to give The Monolith Monsters another view, to see if my thoughts change on it. As a matter of fact, think I'll do that right now.

The 2016 French disc of This Island Earth is quite good. It will be interesting to see if the Scream can improve substantially on the AV presentation as I think the Elephant release looks pretty great already. However, as this is one of my vintage sci-fi favorites, it's not going to take much to make me pick up Scream's release.

ABOUT TIME This Island Earth is coming to blu-ray! i always enjoyed it since i saw it on TV In the 80s as a kid and i enjoyed/owned MST3K's version as well.

There's a big expensive limited set of This Island Earth being released in Germany, mediabook, soundtrack, the lot, & they say it's a new 2018 transfer, & I thought if this is the real deal then it'll show up in other countries, so fingers crossed!

The german set will be a new encode from the old master. The actual disc can already be bought in a cheap paper cover.

Ah, you could be right, it states, New digitally restored HD version (2018), which doesn't necessarily mean a new master. Oh well, wait for the reviews.

Excellent news! I just recently read the book This Island Earth is based on and was eager to see it again, as it had been years since I'd seen the non-MST3K version. I almost broke down and just ordered the DVD but I'm glad I didn't. Very excited for this one.
