Metro Goldwyn Mayer Metro‑Goldwyn‑Mayer

Through its purchases of many different companies and film and television libraries, MGM has greatly enhanced its film and TV holdings.

MGM's library includes the film libraries of:

United Artists (Marty, The Apartment, West Side Story, In the Heat of the Night, Midnight Cowboy, Rocky, Annie Hall, Rain Man, etc.)
Orion Pictures (Platoon, Dances with Wolves, The Silence of the Lambs, etc.)
American International Pictures (House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Premature Burial, Tales of Terror, The Raven, The Haunted Palace, The Masque of the Red Death, The Tomb of Ligeia, etc.)
Filmways (Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, etc.)
The Cannon Group (Joe, Runaway Train, Street Smart, etc.)
PolyGram Filmed Entertainment (pre-March 31, 1996; Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Usual Suspects, Dead Man Walking, Fargo, etc.)
21st Century Film Corporation (Captain America, Bloodmatch, etc.)
Hemdale Film Corporation (The Terminator, The Return of the Living Dead, Salvador, Hoosiers)
Empire International Pictures (Troll, The Caller,The Princess Academy, etc.)
Gladden Entertainment (Mannequin, The Fabulous Baker Boys, etc.)
Sherwood Productions (WarGames, Mr. Mom, Blame it on Rio, etc.)
Castle Rock Entertainment (pre-1994; When Harry Met Sally..., Misery, City Slickers, etc.)
Island Pictures (The Trip to Bountiful, She's Gotta Have It, etc.)
The 1986 films of Blue Velvet and Manhunter from the De Laurentiis Entertainment Group library
The Brother from Another Planet (1984) and The Coca-Cola Kid (1985) from Cinecom
A Doll's House (1973) and Home for the Holidays (Polygram)(1995) from Paramount Pictures
Most of the films released between 1989 and 1992 by Triumph Films (Brenda Starr, Triumph of the Spirit, Wild Orchid, Why Me?, etc.)
In 2012, UK company Park Circus assumed worldwide re-issue distribution rights to the library on behalf of MGM.

Excuse moi. I still read threads where people are confused about what "MGM" actually owns. There did not seem to be a MGM thread under the STUDIO SECTION for reference, so I thought having this info as first line would be helpful. Sorry, I'll have the moderator delete the post and will think twice about trying to relay any useful information on this site.

It's useful to me, as I will be creating an MGM list in a few months. Thank you.

A few clarifications:

MGM only owns MGM films post-1986.
They own a fraction of pre-1952 UA, but most of post-1952 UA.
They own post-1981 Orion, except for "Amadeus" and "Lionheart", which are owned by WB.
They own Filmways TV titles, except for "the Beverly Hillbillies" and "Petticoat Junction".
There are other exceptions as well.

Most of the titles we associate with the prime years of MGM are actually owned by Warner Bros. via its 1996 acquisition of Turner, which bought MGM/UA in 1984 and then sold it, but kept the library. This includes pre-May 1986 MGM Film and TV Productions (but not most UA) and it also includes most of the RKO library.

This is why such titles as "The Wizard of Oz" (originally MGM) and "King Kong (1933)(originally RKO)" have been released on Blu-ray by WB.

There are always exceptions. GIRLS TOWN (1959) was an MGM release, but it seems to neither be with MGM nor Warner nor Republic these days. Some feel that Lionsgate has it, which makes no sense to me.

It's probably public domain. Lionsgate did release some public domain titles in the 1990's.

Ignore the people who just troll this place hoping to pounce on someone with gems like: "Use the search button" or "We know".

Is there an MGM checklist thread? Maybe i'm missing it. Maybe it is just too confusing to do. There should be one from 1924-1981 when MGM was MGM.

They also let the film elements for The Alamo rot in their hands.

That would just duplicate most of the WB checklist.

Movies that MGM released. The WB thread is just for WB not MGM & RKO

I asked the same a while ago in the Warner Blu-ray Checklist thread. User Adam4Rizzel replied he was working on one...

It'd be nice to have an RKO checklist as well.

It's a terrible shame, but it's also a business, sadly. They ain't got money for that stuff.

Can anyone confirm if MGM now own the home video rights to:

SPLIT IMAGE (1982)
LADY BEWARE (1987)

Thank you!

They should protect their assets or sell them to someone who will, if they don't want to do either, then get out of the business.

I would like to point out that MGM also co-owns US rights to a selection of the StudioCanal library.
