Actually I saw a video where a fan-gineer made his own slimmer PS5.

In any event, there's been alleged leaks of a smaller PS5 with a detachable blu-ray drive. We'll see if they end up being real or not.

I know there have been leaks and pics with it debuting next year. (2024). Im simply saying they cant just slim it right now with the current fan design it needs to change.

Personally I think if they mimic the Series X and have a push pull vent port reduce the fan sizes and add more fans it could work similar to server structures.

I'm looking forward to putting the PS6 stacked on top of my current PS4 Pro 2/PS5, and the newer PS5 Pro being planned. Thanks Sony!

Seriously though, a PS6 by 2028 would be a major insult to gamers and an admission by Sony that the PS5 is really an underpowered PS4 Pro 2.
At the trickle rate of PS5 specific games yet to happen for PS5, I need the PS5 to last till 2033 before considering a next gen console.

8 years would be just 1 year longer than the last console generation. I’ll laugh if in 2 years from now IGN still has a weekly show called Next-Gen Console Watch & they are still talking about the PS5.

Currently the launch PS5 uses a 7nm chip while latest revisions use a 6nm chip. Am sure in-house they have got it down to 5nm now.

I do agree with ya about air flow simply because Sony likes to make their consoles look “cosmetically” good while forgoing “Practically”
However smaller chip, less power consumption, smaller power supply etc.. They’ll probably even ditch the Liquid Metal & go Paste for Slim.

2033 is not realistic In all honesty for PS6 they should really just get the results they want and if the price is 1500 for the unit so be it. Right now the Series X and Ps5 both came out at the dawn of RTX technology and they both tried to put it in.

if 4k 60 fps is the goal then put the hardware in that can do that. 1TB SSD were pathetic for this gen. We should be looking at 2-4TB SSD.

Well see what they come up with in a few years from now.

I think it's moreso a reflection of the global events we had with COVID-19 and then the shortage of chips and then the challenging economic conditions people have in some markets, price rises etc. Generations getting longer isn't surprising with such events but i wouldn't mind a switch back to 5 year gaps including a Slim model. That's usually the timescale we tend to get a generational leap worth of hardware but i can't deny 8 years would probably deliver a slightly bigger jump.

I wouldnt ditch it thats for sure, if anything id make sure enough is actually on the chips.

TBH the 5 does not look good cosmetically lol, the PS5 is the prototypical overdesign by Asian culture. (see Kia, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota concept cars for examples of overdesign.)

Series X in all honesty was the perfect upgradable design.

My PS5 works just fine for me now, especially with its backward compatibility and the fact that there are so few great games on the market right now.

I like it a lot too. Especially the digital model because it's symmetrical, unlike the "baby bump" disk model. The X to me is a boring black brick, both aesthetically and functionally!

10+ years for PS4:
PS4 from 2013 through 2023 is still going surprisingly though alongside PS5. I am starting to see more PS5 specific games from indie developers though not for PS4. If it already faded out, then I'd say 2020 was the year it began to fade, but it's still going with new PS4 releases often.

I'm mostly accounting for the big gap since 2020's pandemic situation, and those 3 years of very few AAA games compared to what we got on PS4.
Considering PS5 games are mostly just "PS4 Pro 2" enhanced PS4 games with improved resolution and frame rates, but not much else.

Does the PS5 need something stronger to take its place? Yes, I agree, it's not a very strong machine in terms of consistent 4K 60 fps at this stage, though neither is the XBSX.

I remember every 5 years for new consoles. That was way too short for me, but I kept up with it as a kid for the most part.

Main Consoles I bought and mostly kept up with over the decades:
Colecovision 1983
NES 1985
Sega MS 1987
Sega Genesis 1989
PS1 1995 (got mine 1998)
PS2 2001 (got mine 2002)
XB360 2005
PS3 2006 (Got mine 2010)
PS4 2013 (Longest lifespan of all, 10+ years and still going)
PSVR1 2016 (Got mine 2017)
PS5 2020
PSVR2 2023 (Didn't buy it yet)

PS5 Pro 2025 TBD......
PS6 2028 TBD......

I'll admit, I want more out of each console generation for games and the timeline.
PS5 is nice, but lacking more AAA titles by this point. Thankfully the indie developers filled the gap big time.

It's been slow years recently from AAA developers (3rd party). Sony offered the best they could with 1st party games.
The Independent games really stepped up to the plate and continue to save the day IMO.

About 4 years too early for a PS6 thread but I totally see a PS5 Pro seeing release over the next year or so.

How do you figure PS5 thread was started in 2015, 4 years before PS5 release.

Being a developer, it makes good business sense to support PS4 when PS5 had a small user base of gamers. With most consoles for awhile in the hands of greedy resellers who stifled the market.

Which brings me to my next point. It makes poor business sense for Sony to be bringing a PS6 out in 2028 if the rumor was true. Sony would be wise to at least wait till 2030. I'd be fine with that. 10 years, considering these first 3 have been lackluster overall so far.

We have Ratchet & Clank that shows off the PS5 abilities, but what else has really shown what PS5 can do beyond higher resolution and frame rate? Faster loading?

PS4 Pro also offered near 4K resolution and sometimes faster frame rates, and slightly faster loading too. That's why I call PS5 the PS4 Pro 2, for now anyway until we see a game like the Unreal Engine 5 Tomb Raider-style Tech Demo.

Where are games like that for PS5? And Matrix Awakens, which unfortunately couldn't even hit 4K 60 fps? I think that says a lot about PS5's limited powers, initially hyped up by Sony's Mark Cerny back in 2019. What we've mostly been getting from AAA developers are PS4 games upgraded with 4K 60 fps. That's what PS4 Pro does. And some questionable raytracing effects at times that slow down framerate.

Yes, me too ever since that slight concern about the liquid metal cooling. Anything with liquid, after the 360 issues/red ring of doom, I will follow the advice to put it horizontally. The PS5 has a weird design, just like the old 360 did. Tapered at one point, potentially trapping heat at the narrow side. Horizontal now. It's clumsy looking on its side, that's for sure.

Cool. Mine too. All my consoles are still going except for the 360 which I finally traded in after the 4th refurbished console I got free under the warranty from MS.

By lifespan, I meant games still being made brand new for the PS4, being 10+ years and going much longer 3 years now into PS5's lifespan. They said this is the first time two sibling consoles existed side by side with brand new games for each for so long, due to the pandemic situation and the whole PS5 shortage.
