Why can't there be a both?? I thoroughly enjoyed both shows that offered their own brand of humor.

The correct answer is obviously Seinfeld.

I'm no fan of either (not big on American sitcoms generally) but there is no contest. Seinfeld takes the cake.

I hadn't caught Friends at all during its heyday, though I had caught a few episodes after the fact, and while I can see why it was so popular, it is cringe-inducingly lowbrow and rarely ever clever. It strikes me as the sort of cynical, strenuously focus-grouped show that is very common on free-to-air US television (and I recall it being too blatantly left-leaning to my taste from the few episodes that I had seen, likewise with The Golden Girls, which I was tempted to binge watch as well, but was put off by how transparent it was, even though that too had its moments, and I particularly liked Rue Callahan).

Seinfeld had it moments, and I had binge-watched the series a few years ago (which is something that I rarely do), though I have no intention of ever revisiting it, at least not to that extent. It's entertaining, sure, but I would be content with just watching those little moments again as opposed to sitting through entire episodes. The cast had great chemistry, and the series served as a nice little precursor to Curb Your Enthusiasm, which I have enjoyed a lot more, but that too is quite formulaic, but fortunately it contains season-long arcs and shorter seasons which keep it from wearing out its welcome.

Friends -- which I watched for the first time last year. First season was bland but after that the show picked up and I absolutely loved it.

On the other hand, sadly, I tried to watch Seinfeld a few weeks ago and found it absolutely and painfully unfunny and boring. I'm sure I'm too late for this kind of humor as I know people praise this show non-stop. Too bad. I truly wanted to enjoy it but couldn't. Had to stop around middle Season 2. It was too boring I kept falling asleep.
