Hey Travis!

Just laying low this weekend. Got another nasty cold (second one in 2 months) and I'm pissed about it.

Glad to hear you guys arrived safely back home. How was your trip in general (although I know you guys were sick for a time as well).

What's up Johnny?

This winter has been terrible for colds, our family has had the most colds we can remember since having out kids. I for one can't wait for winter to be over.

I've been on a vinyl kick this week John, tried out a tube component for the first time and it sounds great. Picked up the Project Tube Box SE II phono amp, I'm going to give it some time with the stock tubes before switching them out for some different ones. Not sure what I'll do with the solid state phono amp. One of these days I'll hook it up again and see if I really like the tubes better, if I do then I'll sell it.

Have you decided whether your going with a tube amp next? I know at some point in time you were considering one.

Hey Andrew!

I think this mild winter here in Toronto has had a lot to do with it, and like you...I can't wait for it to be over. I rarely, if ever, get more than just one cold, so this is a pain in the ass.

I've been reading (lurking) more than posting and saw the discussions about your tube phono amp. Give those tubes some time and get used to their sound, and then start "rolling". It's not an inexpensive thing to do as Rhett alluded to in one of his posts, but it is fun.

My preference is still to get a tube amp, and if I do, it'll likely be another IA. However, I may just go with a high-quality tube phonostage initially. We'll see. So many options, so a lot will depend on what deal I can get. I also really like the idea of a combo SS/Tube system. Perhaps an SS Power amp with a tube pre and tube phonostage.

Hopefully I'll be able to get one major piece this year.

Good day to stay in doors then. We are suppose to get down to -7C or 20° F tonight with the wind whipping to 25 MPH. So in the single digit wind chill. I have a charity Texas Hold Em game to go to around noon today. So I will have to dress in layers. It will be colder outside after the game then before the game.

So would you say the higher quality phono stages have a built in power supply vs a wall wart?( 16v is usually what they are from what I've seen )

Do phono stages really draw enough power to warrant a bigger overbuilt power supply?

Being a rookie to vinyl and the associated components that's something I've been debating. I got this particular phono stage as the sale price made it the cheapest route for me to try out a tube component to see if I like the sound.

You've kinda got me there, as I'm the world's biggest techo-phool....I know nothing about these kinds of things. Usually the better phonostages have built-in power supply and don't utilize wall warts, although I'm sure there are exceptions. Some of the more expensive ones also have seperate power supplies that work in conjunction with the phonostage.

I may be wrong but most analog components like this don't really seem to draw much power, I guess more research needs to be done on my part.

What about switching the headshell wires? Does this provide any sonic benefits?

It has been suggested to me but I haven't gone ahead with it as I don't know if it's worth the added expense. Would it be better to just get a new table one day than put any money into the one I've got?

Changing the wiring should most definitely be of benefit, and it's something I've been considering as well. Most dealers can get a rewiring kit and install it for you. I haven't checked on pricing latety, but it could cost anywhere from $100-$300.

The ones that I've been thinking about are the Oyaide HSR-CU
http://www.planetofsoundonline.com/m/Oyaide

$100 installed for that kit.

I guess why I haven't gone ahead with any of these small tweaks or upgrades to the table is I'm not sure whether the money would be better spent going towards a new table.

Personally....I would get a better table as opposed to doing a bunch of tweaks. A new TT should provide you with a better foundation on which to build.

That's what I was thinking but just needed some confirmation, thanks John.

My long term plan is to replace the speakers first, then the IA and finally the table and other source components.
