I have both and was underwhelmed when I watched the German release and so when the TT version was announced and it was produced from a new master I ordered a copy. Let's just say it is well worth buying and is much better - including the audio which is 5.1 vs 2.0 for the German blu ray - which is region locked as well.

I thought The Blue Max looked good on most fronts, but it really looks like the color's been tweaked in accordance with modern T&O trends (more teal than orange). Of the three I reviewed from the same wave, The Eddy Duchin Story and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot both appeared far more natural.

I have the French release & it's also marked regions A, B & C on the back, I'm sure it's fine. Well worth buying, a stunning PQ (just don't buy the German release!).

![]() ![]() I'm going with a copy via Amazon IT, to go along with some other items. Helps spread out the shipping cost, which was only ~$12 for Global Priority. And with the great conversion rates right now, the movie is only ~$9.50. Last edited by Midnight Rambler; 01-21-2015 at 12:46 AM. |

Says it's region-free, and Japan is "A" anyways, so you should be OK. But it's $29+, before shipping, ie. no cheaper than TT's release. If you want cheaper and region-free, try the Italian release at AMZ Italy for $11 plus shipping. The only difference is the coverart is in Italian.

Only extras on the Fox Japan BD are trailers: Original Theatrical Trailer, Spanish Trailer and Portuguese Trailer (these are essentially the same with different VO and titles)
Also included are audio options: DTS-HD 3.0 Master Audio English Surround Dolby Digital 2.0 French DTS 4.0 Spanish DTS-HD 1.0 Master Audio Italian DTS-HD 1.0 Master Audio and SDH in English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Dutch The case and slipcover are marked Region A. Picture quality is fantastic. |

I love aviation films and WW2 era flicks so I regretted missing out on the TT version. Nowadays I keep ahead of Twilight Times releases, but back then I was in the dark days of not utilizing blu-ray.com as a resource to inform my buying decisions. I also grabbed Indicator's release of Castle Keep (another world war two sleeper that's highly entertaining), a German import of The Philadelphia Experiment (I'm expecting subpar quality but I've always enjoyed the film) and the German import of Breakout (the best remaining Bronson film waiting for a region A release, probably). Lately I'm finding some good deals on OOP titles and imports at ebay, even though I rarely shop there. But anyway, I'm glad to hear the Japanese import of The Blue Max has excellent video quality. 54 (and up) dollars for the Twilight Time copy was a tad steep. |

I've owned the TT edition since it came out, but despite how clean and detailed the 4K remaster is, I'm still bothered by the teal-leaning color balance. Although I've tried to just accept it, looking at it recently, I just don't know about the "correctness" of it.
Anyone else feel the same? |
