Default HD surround sound

Hey guys i'm thinking of upgrading my onkyo TX-sr601 to a HK247. My question is can you tell any different when listening optical output vs. hdmi output? I tried going to few audio stores, but none had hdmi setup for their sound. Is it worth the money upgrading, and is there much of a difference in the quality of sound?

I just upgraded to an Onkyo 605. I would have to say that the sound quality was worth the money for hdmi, but it could just be the fact of getting a better receiver than I had. ( had an Onkyo 504 via optical from a PS3. Same bose speakers)

I just upgraded my PS3 to the Panasonic BD30 which bitstreams the HD audio to my Onkyo 705 receiver. I didn't believe it before, but having the Receiver do the decoding makes a difference over the PCM setting. Don't get me wrong, the PS3 does a fantastic job of internal decoding, but wow, the receiver does an even better job. I had to switch back and forth a few times to believe the difference I was hearing.

There was probably a 25% improvement in the clarity of the vocals and surround. Bass remained about the same. If you can have your receiver decode the HD audio, it is well worth the extra investment. Either way, running the audio through the HDMI is a significant improvement over optical cables or SPDIF. Its like someone took off the earmuffs.

HDMI is the way to go for your audio!
