Default Blu-ray Player + Sony Surround Sound = NO SOUND........HELP.....Please

Hello,

Well....I have a 42" LG Plasma, along with an HD DVR, an Xbox 360, a Sony Surround Sound w/HDMI, and a Sony Blu Ray Player.

As it stands, everything is working except for the Blu Ray. I am not getting any sound from the tv set nor the surround sound system from my Blu Ray player. I have the HDMI plugged in from the Blu Ray to the TV...

I just cant seem to figure out what needs to change to make this work.

The Sony Surround Sound A/V Receiver has an HDMI port and my TV has an extra as well....do I connect an HDMI cable from the TV to the surround sound?

Im confused.

PLEASE HELP....

Thank you,

Aaron

Blu Ray player HDMI into Receiver, HDMI out from Receiver to in to the TV.

Everything should go to the receiver and basically one HDMI cable to TV for everything.

im just guessing, but if your sound system only has one HDMI port...it is probably an "output'.

so you might have to connect an optical cable from the bluray player to the sound system.

what is your sound system model number?

Some recievers have HDMI inputs but they are onlyl for switching, meaning they do not accept audio over HDMI, they merely switch signals if you have more than one device using an HDMI connection. Look at the model # and the people here can give you a better idea.

Question Reply

Thank you guys all for the input...

The model number is a Sony DAV-HDZ235.

There is only one HDMI port on the back and its labeled "HDMI OUT - DVD ONLY" (this surround sound unit is a dvd player also).

I would definitely appreciate some feedback on this. There isnt many ports on the back of this receiver at all.

Thanks,
Aaron

TosLink (optical) from the PS3 to your Sony DAV-HDZ235. Set your PS3 to output bitstream.

HDMI from your PS3 to your TV for picture. Not sure if you will also get sound through your set, or not. When you output sound through optical on the PS3, it may not also allow HDMI sound.

Connecting your Sony DAV-HDZ235 to your set via HDMI will only transmit DVD picture and sound from that device to the TV. If your set has only one HDMI input, your PS3 should take priority.

Shouldn't he set the PS3 to PCM seeing that it can't bitstream the HD codec yet? Or am late

10-4 - make sure your Sony BD is set to PCM.

I misread his post and saw "PS3", when he has a Sony BD player. Since he can only send sound to his surround/combo unit via optical, he can't send LPCM (only bitstream) and will not be able to listen to the HD codecs. I don't think the Sony BD player even decodes them, but I could be wrong.

What model Sony BD player do you have?

So, connect your Sony BD player to your surround unit via TosLink (optical cable) and set your player to output bitstream. Connect your Sony BD player to your TV with HDMI for picture (and maybe sound, not sure, and it probably doesn't matter).

Sorry. I'm looking at your Sony surround system here. It does not appear to have an optical input. I just assumed they all did, these days. If I'm reading this right, the only way for you to get audio from your BD player to your surround system will be by using stereo RCA (red/white) plugs. In doing this, I don't believe you will be getting any surround sound, only 2-channel stereo.
