Default Atmos worth the upgrade?

So I've always wanted atmos but being that I live in a town house I didn't really want to run the speakers in the ceiling its such a hassle I was just going to wait until I buy my new home but I just ran into these klipsch upfiring atmos speakers seems as if there a great alternative to in ceiling speakers. Any have experience with them or any kind up upfiring speakers if so how do they sound as far as atmos goes do you still get the immersive experience without in ceiling speakers? Btw I have a 5.1 system and was planning on putting the klipsch on my front Polk towers. And will it be ok quality wise if I have Polk speakers but a klipsch height speaker.

well, this seems familiar try going to a store that has ATMOS set up with up-firing speakers and give it a listen and judge with your ears, that's the best way to do it. to me, ceiling speakers would be the best and the true intent, but, up-firing speakers can be an effective alternative.

go find a place to audition them, people have opinions, and they are nice, but, you have ears, that's the only real way to do it.

best of luck, keep us posted.

don't think, go and find out, they may just have some setup for a demo. I have a friend who has dolby module speakers and he likes them very much.

I have heard them demo'd and they sound good and that's someone who has ceiling mounted speakers. remember, that's just me, you may or may not like what you hear, so, again, you need to hear them first.

if you can't audition them at the store, make sure you buy speakers that offer a 15-30 day return for full refund policy so you can audition them at home.

much better than what?

if your asking me do I like movies that have a well mixed ATMOS soundtrack, then the answer is yes.

if your asking me do I like a crap ATMOS mix better than a well mixed 5-7 channel surround soundtrack then no.

a good mix is a good mix first and foremost. a good ATMOS mix vs a good 5-7channel surround mix are equally good, but, the ATMOS mix will be more "encompassing" than the conventional 5-7 channel mix could ever be.

I think if you're willing to invest in a good receiver and good speakers then it's worth it. Otherwise I'm happy with something that just does plain old lossy Dolby and DTS.

There are a ton of 1080p Atmos discs. Basically any title released theatrically in Atmos from WB, Lionsgate, and Paramount in the last few years will have that on the 1080p disc. Universal also does Atmos on 1080p discs but are less reliable.

Sony used to have Atmos on 1080p but seemed to have moved onto UHD exclusive for that, while Fox (and seemingly now Disney) are always UHD exclusive for Atmos.

Is Atmos worth the upgrade? Absolutely, for me it is. But there are so many variables. Firstly your room / ceiling & setup has a great influence especially on up-firing speakers. I have the Klipsch up-firing speakers and they sound great in my setup. Placement & calibration is important as well. Secondly the content, most of the recent 4k releases (John Wick 2, PowerRangers, Great Wall to name a few) have great Atmos mix and it's only going to get better. I would say buy it from a place that you can easily return if you are not satisfied with the performance in your setup.

fun fact, those 3 titles mentioned all have ATMOS soundtracks on their 1080p releases. the titles need to be checked and verified as to which versions (if any) have ATMOS or DTS:X soundtracks.

can't see your pictures and damn son, did you not read the two post before you posted this one!

it will depend on the studio, some will release ATMOS/DTS:X on all releases (HD & UHD) some will release on only UHD.

you got it now?!?

Most, if not all of the Lionsgate releases have Atmos. Others, you will have to check individually. Regardless, for blu rays that doesn't have Atmos or dts:x you can "upmix" using your new receiver. Dolby's DSU & DTS Neural: X processing sounds amazing on regular blu rays. They process the existing DTS HD MA & Dolby True HD to utilize the height channels and provide a more immersive experience equivalent (sometimes better) to Atmos or Dts:x. Even music sounds amazing with up mixing. You can set it up in your receiver to do this. This way you can fully enjoy your new Atmos speakers and receiver. Your setup looks good, enjoy!

My upfiring speakers don't seem to do what they're supposed to- the sound doesn't bounce off the ceiling, it just sounds like they're coming from the speakers. Being in an apartment I have limited choices where to place them but hoping to move eventually.

I wanted to respond here because there is not much on our forums with regard to hardware options. To answer the threads' question, in my case the answer is a resounding yes. I agree your own particular room probably makes a difference, but I can only respond based upon my own situation.

I do have to say that since I had the ability and the access to install ceiling speakers, that is the way I went. Also, I had only a 7.2 A/V receiver and so I could only do 5.1.2 in the Atmos setup. Added a second sub a few months after installing the whole affair, to try to fill out the lower end. That definitely added a lot of presence, however, just moving to the Atmos setup without the 2 subs made a big difference. Don't know how it would have worked with up-firings speakers, but in my situation I actually did not have anywhere to put those type of speakers and I had a feeling that if I could do a ceiling install it would probably sound better.

I believe I increased the signals to the 2 ceiling speakers as my Audessy did not seem to be loud enough, but the difference between my regular 5.1 setup and the new Atmos 5.1 was without a doubt much better. I did locate the ceiling speakers in what is called the Top Middle position. If I ever move to 7.1.2 by adding the 2 more ceiling speakers, I will move them back to rear ceiling position and add the front ceilings. I know I don't get the full Atmos effects without the other set of speakers, but this is much fuller, richer and overall nicer than just the regular 5.1 setup. It was definitely worth it.

Additionally, A/V most receivers will mix up any Atmos/DTS-X into a surround format that will take advantage of the additional speakers. I have found both formats to be enjoyable, more so than what I had before with only the regular 5.1 setup.
