I also thought this episode was better than the pilot, so it's won me back for another couple weeks at least.

And I read that ABC picked it up for a full season yesterday.

Personally, I'll take Dr. Murphy over House. I could never get into that show because I couldn't stand the lead character.

That's basically the only reason I liked the show. What didn't you like about him?

I really dug the pilot. Freddie Highmore is excellent. Although, I wasn't sold on the other characters. I'll watch simply for him though. They can develop the side characters as time goes on.

Third episode was pretty good. They're starting to develop the side characters more, and I appreciated that. I hope Shaun sees more of his neighbor too. That'd be a cool side arc for him. Ditto to the cat.

Watched the Pilot last night. Pretty "meh".

What worked so great about House, was that Hugh Laurie was supposed to be an a**hole. You're not supposed to like him, but you respect him because of his brilliance. All the flashbacks to Shaun's childhood trying to make you feel for him and root for him...I hated that. I don't want to "connect" with this doctor. I don't want to feel sad for this doctor. I actually laughed out loud when his father
[Show spoiler]threw his pet rabbit against the wall
. So whatever feelings and emotions the creator's were going for, completely failed on me. I don't want a feel good story.

The science aspect, and the way it shows the doctor's thought process is pretty neat though.

I was also highly annoyed at the long sequence of Shaun trying to get into the hospital when the security guard wouldn't let him. I think that was supposed to be played for laughs and comedy, but it annoyed me to no end. I get the dude has autism, but holy sh**, why wouldn't he tell the security guard "Hey, I'm a doctor. I work here" at least ONE time during that entire altercation? Surely that's not out of the realm of being autistic.

I agree that the security guard sequence was pretty bad and not at all funny, but wasn't Shaun kicked out by other doctors after he entered the hospital? Therefore, the security guard was tipped off from inside the building and knew who Shaun was and why he was being kicked out. At least that's how I remember it.

In any case, it does get better after the pilot. I haven't watched episode 3 yet though.

Yeah, he walked in telling the female student she needed to perform a certain test. Then he was getting a little belligerent when she refused to listen to him (him being a stranger with autism). I think he mentions to her that he is a doctor? I think she even asked him for ID to prove that, but he didn't have any.

Either way, he never specifically told security he was a doctor. Just the other female student. I'd think that after trying 4 different entrances, he'd at least tell security once that he is, in fact, an employee of that hospital.

That's because he wasn't an employee of the hospital yet. The entire point of the episode is him proving he's worth finalizing and hiring. He didn't work there yet, and the board was nervous on signing off on him due to his condition. Would you believe some random autistic kid who you'd never seen before, with no proof of any sort, and no one else knows him either? Especially when he's being belligerent and, in a sense, potentially dangerous or harmful to the patients potential well being.

That being said, while I really enjoy the show, there are absolutley aspects that they need to work on as time goes on. The pilot is overly schmaltzy and to "feel-good". The other two episodes have lessened that each time. There's hasn't been another ridiculously sad death or anything to traumatized Shaun even further. They still have to work on tone, and they have to make the other doctors interesting for the series to work long-term. They can't rely on one character to do all the heavy lifting for the series.

Which is correct...for us the viewers. As well as the board of directors. However, in Shaun's brain, he didn't know any of that. In the first scene of the show, when he corrects the doctor on the ground at the airport, they ask who he is. He responds, "Hello, I'm Doctor Shaun Murphy, I'm a surgical resident at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital."

So, while we know he doesn't yet have the job, he doesn't quite understand that himself.

Just finished the second episode, and I guess I really just have to scale back my expectations for this show. I need to remember this is on Network TV. It's going to take zero risks. It's going to be very straightforward and full of "happy endings".

I was really hoping the test results for the little girl would
[Show spoiler]come back completely normal. I wanted to see Shaun fail. I wanted to see him be wrong. I wanted him to be punished further for ordering unnecessary tests. This show literally set it up to where he was getting in trouble for doing things he doesn't need to be doing, then rewards him for doing it one more time. I hate that type of story telling.
.

I also really don't like the mirroring of his childhood to present day. Showing him having trouble knocking on someone's door as a child, then showing him having a hard time knocking on someone's door as an adult. That's so lame/cheesy.

I really don't want this show to be "Everyone tells Shaun not to do something. Shaun does something. He ends up being correct" every episode. As of now, this show has no real stakes at all. It's way too safe and predictable.

[Show spoiler]watch the third episode.

I agree. It keeps getting better and better.

I desperately want Shaun in the OR regularly, but that's going to take time.

I really enjoy the show. The actor that plays Shawn is really good and I now want to see Bates Motel to see him in another role.

Okay, liked a couple things quite a bit early in Episode 3.

The neighbor giving advice to not feed to stray cat was brilliant. "Feed it once and it will never leave you alone." Literally saying that as he's giving her the batteries she's requesting (similar to feeding her, if you will). Implying she will now be an prominent character in the show that won't leave Shaun alone.

Also, "You don't know the longevity of a liver?"
"This is a teaching hospital, I'm the teacher."

That was great. Love the quirky dialogue like that.

Is him not liking questions due to his autism, or just a personality quirk? I don't have much personal experience with autism, but I didn't think disliking being asked questions was a characteristic of it.

I really don't like the whole liver transport portion of this episode.
[Show spoiler]OF COURSE there was an issue with it. Why wouldn't there be? Something that would be very common and usually never have any issues. Taking an organ out of an organ donor is common practice. To have an error like this? Come on. Way too convenient for a tv series. Just a set up.

No sympathy for Chuck.
[Show spoiler]Dude had one instruction, don't drink any alcohol. The stakes were super big. Drink alcohol = don't get your life saving organ transplant. He drank it knowing full well what he was doing. Is that symbolism really worth your life? I hate how commonplace alcohol is in American society. It's really not hard to abstain from alcohol. I'm 29 years old, and never touch the stuff. I know my opinions are definitely in the minority, but I'm very militant against alcohol. I was at my cousin's wedding over the weekend, and while everyone lifted their glasses of champagne to toast the bride and groom, I held up my coffee cup full of black coffee instead.

I seem to be bashing the show quite a lot in this thread, but I don't actually hate it. Or even dislike it. It's an enjoyable, easy to watch show. I think more than anything, I'm just annoyed by it. By how safe it's played. But overall, I'm going to continue watching it. Freddie Highmore was great in Bates Motel, and I enjoy seeing him on the screen in any capacity.

With all due respect, it seems this show is irritating you and nothing about it will please you.

[Show spoiler]Yes, Chuck screwed up. But he was clearly more sympathetic than the other patient with the hole in his face who continued smoking despite doctors' warnings - even after his operation. He will likely be back in that OR eventually because he'll continue doing what he's doing and money is no object to him. Big difference from Chuck who made a one-time lapse in judgment. I don't drink either and feel much the same way you do, but come on now!

BTW, you should probably spoiler tag your views on the Chuck storyline, as that's a much bigger reveal than the
[Show spoiler]problematic liver delivery
.

Something kinda clicked, and I'm definitely enjoying this more. I think I've just spent enough time with the characters that I like spending time with them. Well...most of them. Still don't like Neil, the attending surgeon. He's way too cocky and arrogant for my liking.

My main issue with episode 4 is the show trying to shove it's own morality down our throats, regardless if it was their intent or not.
[Show spoiler]Equating doing porn to making a mistake. When the young porn actress was lamenting her feelings about getting the tumor and doing porn...

Patient: "Could you tell your father you're a *****?"
Dr. Claire: "You made a mistake, that is all."

Um...I'm sorry...but why is doing porn a mistake? That's sex-shaming, sex workers don't deserve any less respect. Equating porn to bad, or a mistake, is harmful and a huge mistake IMO.

Highmore's acting & performance is absolutely wonderful. I think he's the main draw for this show, for sure.

He seemed less arrogant to me in this episode, but yeah, I agree with you - I don't like this doc either.

I suspect there's more than meets the eye to him though. For example, what's with that awful tattoo near his neck?

My prediction (and I promise you I haven't read spoilers - if there's even such a thing for this show): By the end of the season, arrogant doc will be in a life-threatening situation and Dr. Shaun Murphy will have to save him.

I don't think it's a mistake in general, necessarily - but the character was 18, estranged from her parents, and she seemed to think her life choices up until that point were a mistake.

He is the highlight and not-so-secret weapon of this show.

My big beefs, though, are:

- What the hell is up with Richard Schiff? He was so amazing in the pilot, but his only purpose since then has been to look old and tired. What a waste.

- The "comedy" continues to be strained, such as the scenes with the superintendent of the apartment.
