Default YouTube Red's "Cobra Kai" (Season 2)

Quote:
Three decades after The Karate Kid, original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are heading back to the dojo. The duo are set to reprise their roles as underdog Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) and bully Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) in a 10-episode straight-to-series follow-up called Cobra Kai for subscription service YouTube Red.

The series, set to bow in 2018, is set 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament and revolves around a down and out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). The half-hour comedy follows the duo addressing demons from their past and present frustrations through (what else?) karate.

Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) as well as duo Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar) will pen the script and exec produce alongside Macchio and Zabka. Hurwitz and Schlossberg will direct much of the series. Will Smith's Sony Pictures Television Studios-based Overbrook Entertainment will exec produce with James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett overseeing for the company.

Macchio and Zabka are expected to make an appearance Thursday at YouTube's portion of the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Beverly Hills.

I think this could be pretty cool as Macchio and Zabka seem to have good chemistry for comedy in real life, judging from their con appearances. My only hope is that they don't use the comedy to crap all over the events of the original film.

So this is a straight up comedy? I'm actually ok with that. I don't want a dramatic spinoff/sequel about the Daniel/Johnny rivalry/friendship.

I'm curious who else from the original film will make an appearance. Can they convince Elisabeth Shue to reprise the role of Ali? What about the other Cobra Kais? And how about Terry Silver? Technically he's still the owner of the Cobra Kai dojo, not Kreese(unless Part III is gonna be ignored by this series).

the events of Cobra Kai take place 30 yrs which is close to the 1989 release of The Karate Kid Part III. Next Karate Kid is most likely ignored. But this idea is pretty cool and without the Father/Son drama it can take a more comedic turn. But you wonder if by end of the 10 episode run Johnny and Daniel will be pals. instead of rivals. Hopefully they'll get Martin Cove back. He is essential especially if Johnny holds a grudge against how his Sensei treated him after he lost the All-Valley tourney. I am also curious about Terry Silver, but it looks as if Thomas Ian Griffith hasn't acted since 2007 according to his IMDB.

Part III probably should be ignored. It never made any sense that a year after assaulting and nearly killing one of his students, Kreese is right back there at the tournament representing his dojo and doing so with a toxic waste dumper constantly under indictment as his sponsor.

Then again, almost none of Part III made any sense.

Indeed. Even Mr. Miyagi was confused.

I'd rather see a comedy follow-up then them try to do a serious one, but I also don't think it needs a 10-episode series. Maybe a one-shot at best.

Of course, it doesn't matter, since it's on YouTube Red and no one is ever going to see it. Who would pay for that crap? It's mostly just sh!tty amateur shows by sh!tty wannabe social network celebrities.

Fun fact: Ralph Macchio is now four years older than Pat Morita was when he did Karate Kid.

Yeah, the modern definition of that word has really become skewed. From an '80s standpoint, the Karate Kid films are comedies; I often found them in that section of video stores. But so many attempts to get people laughing these days are just one crude reference after another...which is more sad than funny.

YouTube Red is in the same service as Google Play music which millions of people have. not sure how many realize you get YouTube red for free.
