i don’t want to oversell this, but i can not speak highly enough about this movie. this was the most blown away i think i had ever been by a movie. there are so many genius touches to this that you don’t even notice the first couple times you see it.

besides the fact that is so ballsy, there is no way you watch this movie and could possibly guess most of the things that happen in it.

it had been like ten years since we had a verhoeven movie. and to come back with this is just astounding.

let’s be frank, movies are coming bland and safe and trying to appeal to a wide audience and there is no tension or mystery or heart or soul in them. they don’t try to let things unfold, it’s just terrible plotting and blatant foreshadowing. (it’s really why there is such nostalgia for 70s cinema.)

and then here comes this movie, that punches you in the mouth right from the start. this is not formulaic at all. this does not follow any of the rules of any genre. it’s really hard not to talk about how amazing huppert is in this movie. that might be the most egregious oscar snub i can think of.

this is a movie i’ve thought every day since i’ve seen, and i got to see it at a sold out screening at film festival, and some of those moments are perfect.

I... still haven't seen it I'm guessing I should watch the full 240-minute cut all the way through?

Breaking the Waves though.

(I know not 2010s but still)

Yes, the full 240 minutes back-to-back is a complete experience, kinda like watching Red Cliff or Kill Bill in two parts. Probably wouldn't be much of an issue to split it across a couple of days if you had to, but I think it goes by pretty breezily.

I'd advise caution on the director's cut on account of the
[Show spoiler]abortion
scene, which is a hard watch even for me. The other added scenes are quite seamless though. Both versions are pretty decent.

Breaking the Waves might actually be my favorite Von Trier film. I seem to bounce between that and Dancer in the Dark at the moment.

[Show spoiler]Hmm. On one hand, I've probably seen worse in med school. On the other hand, the stillbirth scene in Roma wrecked me.
I'll probably seek out the Director's Cut. Thanks, Al.

Now that one I can't wait to get to.

Breaking the Waves is definitely my fave Von Trier. I was blown away when I first saw it. Just the way it tackles faith so dark and cynically. It rips your soul out.

Making a list of 100 films seemed to be harder than 150, so I went with 150. Might change around the order and add/delete/change films until the deadline, but this will do for now.

This has to be the most obscure list in the entire thread so far. Some on my watchlist, most I haven’t heard of, almost all I haven’t seen.

After looking through the thread, it looks like 50 might be the reasonable number to go with to award points up to, but I encourage everyone to list as many as they’d like, be it 100, 150+. Mine tapered off around 75 for now, just because that happens to be more or less where the quality step-off arrived for me.

What are everyone’s thoughts on the upper limit for awarding points?

It's Mothravka ... what do you expect? The one thing I do know, however, is whenever I see a list like this from someone like him, I've now got all sorts of things to search out! I mean, no one's going to put Avengers: Endgame into his or her list, and suddenly, I'll be like: "Oh! There's a movie I hadn't heard of!"

But yeah, I'm RESERVING this spot. I have SO many films yet to see from 2019 (LOL! I almost typed 1919 ).

Default Request (OPTIONAL)

Can everyone write the year of release next to each film title on their lists? You don’t have to, but it would help me in crunching the numbers, identify which film it is, and may help other members spot discrepancies or make notes of the prevalence of different years among lists. I’ll add this to the OP.

Thank you!
