What is the single best horror movie from the past 20 years (2000-now)?

I guess I'd go with 30 Days of Night

Why? Danny Huston

I would probably say The Descent. It did something quite different from anything else out there really, and was truly terrifying. I also think the film has excellent replay-value, and it manages to creep me out no matter how many times I've seen it.

I'd say these are among the best:

The Decent
28 Days Later
The VVitch
[REC] (and [REC]2 as well)
Hereditary

At least somewhat "off the top of my head," after giving it some fairly good thought I am going with:

It's beautiful and disturbing and unsettling. Glazer does an unsurprisingly fantastic job behind the camera, and Scarlett is, as always, mesmerizing in front of it. The soundscape is like something wrapped around you and it won't let go.

The whole thing is just brilliant, as far as I'm concerned. And it's very different, unique.

Zombie's Halloween II. Vicious brutality fused with surreal nightmarish imagery that goes beyond anything seen in the franchise before or since. As a matter of fact, it goes beyond most movies, period. Also one of the most emotionally shattering stories about loss and trauma I've ever seen. Brad Dourif's face when he realizes what happened to his daughter will stay with me forever.

Sinister. Simple reason: it's damn scary.

Inside (2007) - An invasion like that could scarily happen in real life. The gore is excellent. Great tense moments leading up to the inevitable confrontation between the two women.

It can interchange with Saw (2004) as my #1 though.

This movie was truly horrific. I've only seen it once and, frankly, I'm not sure I want to see it again.

I started that film last week. It was so bad I stopped after half an hour. The original is so much better.
(no offense if you liked it)

The Ring is terrible. I rewatched it a year ago and struggled to sit through it. Another movie that I'll never bother with again.

The original never really connected with me. I don't know know why, but I've tried on more than one occasion.

some thoughts...

session 9 is so underrated.

the first saw, to see without hype was a fantastic experience. we look at as having lots of sequels, but that wasnít a sure thing,

the descent is a perfect movie.

inside is amazing. and to a lesser extent, frontiers.

i love the under the skin

recently, train to busan is fantastic.

more of a comedy, but i absolutely love deathgasm.

the wailing doesnít get talked about enough.

those are the ones that come to mind quickly.

halloween 2 is interesting, but it wouldnít even be the best horror release the year it came out. so letís chill on the best of list for that one.
