Timely. I've been thinking seriously about getting a region-free Blu-Ray player for 3D movies too. I've been looking at this:

What is a good 3D BR player that will play blu-ray discs from other regions?
Emoto- what did u end up getting? I’m in the market myself for a 4k/blu ray 3D player but don’t want to spend Oppo money.....

If you can hold out for the next sale price on the Sony UBP-X800 it has amazing picture quality and also plays 4K discs. During Black Friday and around Christmas time it was on sale everywhere for $149.99 There's also the UBP-X700 coming out soon that should be a bit cheaper. It does pretty much everything the 800 does but will include Dolby Vision as well.

I got the Sony UBP-X800 player from Bombay Electronics. I went onto their eBay page and they ended up doing a best offer deal for $325 shipped. It's been the best money I've spent on a player so far. The picture quality is amazingly better than my older Samsung 3D player ever was. And it will play 4K discs as well. The X700 debuts soon so I'm wondering if they will mod them to be region free as well? They have the X800 listed as $400 but when I got my deal I think they wanted $450 or $499.....can't remember which. Couldn't hurt to shoot them an offer of $300 and see if they accept.

The Sony BDP-S6700 and BDP-S6500 have gotten very good reviews here and either can also be found from a few sellers that have been modded to be region free for not too much more. There's a lot of good threads in here about the region free models. I was going to get the region free 6500 model if I hadn't gotten the X800 for a good price.

Hey Unblinking Stare,

Did you end up picking up the region free Sony S6700? I was looking at that one too. I also a Sony S5500 that is much cheaper.

Anyone else have thoughts or preferences on the best Sony 3D region free models?

I'm in the market for a really great region free 3D player. I have been putting off this investment for way to long now and I am missing out on way to many movies I cannot get here in the US.

So reading reviews it sounds like the Sony UBPX800 has a great picture but breaksdown a lot.

Has anybody tried or bought the LG BP550? Is it a decent player?

Thanks in advance!
Shot MarkBirds a PM on the side as he did purchase this one, but just wondering if anybody else also purchased the LG BP550 Region free 3D player. If so would you recommend it? In the market for a region free player, and trying to get LG as I have an LG OLED TV. I don't have a 4K TV, and don't care about streaming as I have a ROKU for that. This would be just used for non region A discs.
