The real time conversions are horrible. They really add some minor depth in some very limited circumstances. Otherwise they just remove some detail and crop the image abit.

The PS3 is not programmed to upconvert 2D to 3D for Blu-ray or DVD.

As far as I know it's the TV that converts 2D to 3D not the blu-ray players. Any computer generated movie looks pretty good upconverted to 3D. I've seen The Incredibles, Toy Story and Astro Boy and I liked the way they looked.

But compare it to the actuall 3d presentations of those films and it looks horrible.

Panasonic, Samsung and Sony have all annouced new models of Blu-ray players that include 2D to 3D conversion. These should be available sometime this spring.

PS3 can't do 2D to 3D conversion, but some 3DTV can.

i just purchased the Sony BDP-S780
It does "2d-to-3D conversion" All it does is push the entire image backwards into the screen, and curve the outside edges. This gives you the effect of seeing the movie on a giant curved screen. It's a nice idea, but it's hardly "3D". I'm much happier with the video adjustments you can make in player...for example they have a setting called "texture remaster" where you can control the level of DNR (for you grain haters) or where you can significantly reduce noise on DVD upscaling. It also is the only player I'm aware of that allows 2D to 3D "conversion" of DVD's and internet video (such as Netflix.) |

Many of the manufacturers have the 2d to 3d conversion built in to there TV's so don't have it on there Blu-ray players. |

Tns49 is correct,
it is not the Blu Ray players that can go from 2D-3D, it is the TV's themselves. My Samsung can do this, also, i dont think Plasmas can do this either...... |

I think in most cases it's the TV that does it and not the player. Because it should work with any content (3D VHS anyone? lol...).
So check the specs on your telle. If it has 2D-3D in it, you're set! I think a lot of LG models have this? I don't really know... I haven't heard good things about this though. I heard it costs $150,000 a minute to properly convert a 2D film to 3D, and most of these don't look that great (though this figure may be for the conversions that DO look good; Captain America, Lion King, Pirahna). So I can't see how real-time converting for absolutely free (minues electricity) would look that great. My PC can aparently do it, but for these above reasons I haven't really looked into how to do it. |
