That's definitely a positive endorsement. I'm just bummed that it looks like I won't get to see it until I watch it at home. Oh well. What else is new?

The movie evoked images and feelings from many movies I liked -- VVitch (obv), Shining, Swiss Army Man, Annihilation, Shape of Water (lol) -- but it never seemed to come together into something cohesive for me. I'll reserve judgement until I can watch it with subtitles, since I feel like I understood less than half of the dialogue. I noted allusions to mythology, particularly Prometheus and Sisyphus and the movie probably followed themes of Rime of the Ancient Mariner even more closely than I realize, as I remember only bits and pieces of the poem.

Thumbs down

I appreciated the cinematography and performances, but I didn't care for this at all. I do wish I could have watched it with subtitles. Didn't know what Dafoe was saying a lot of the time. Yet I have no interest in revisiting this again when I can watch it with subtitles.

Definitely a new iconic monologue of cinema.

- And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger...
- I... drink... your... milkshake!
- You are sheltering enemies of the state, are you not?
- You get what you f***ing deserve!
- HAAAAAAAARK!!!

There has to be more to it than just being nice looking. Or if there's not it has to at least not be boring. And unfortunately to me this was pretty damn boring.

Watching this tonight. To my surprise and delight, it is playing in a small local theatre!

It is playing in the local theatre 5 times, I think over the weekend, so I don't expect a huge crowd. I might even indulge in some snacks to support the theater.

[UPDATE]
So, watched the Lighthouse last Friday evening. The theater (live theatre + small music concerts as well as movies) that has capacity of 700 was about 10% full and it was only 2nd out of 5 showings. No wonder big theatres don't touch it. Definitely prefer watching this type of movie over blockbusters, including Frozen 2.

The ending was a head scratcher (which I love) and tried to make some sense of it on the way home. The pace and ambiance of the Lighthouse, I thought, was similar to Lee Chang Dong's Burning. A slow degeneration of reality, ambiguous blend of real/fantasy/dream/perception, then the WTF climax + ending. Plus some elements of Bela Tarr's Turin Horse (but certainly not as soul crushingly slow). Willem Dafoe was outstanding. Robert Pattinson was good.

I do agree with general comment regarding comprehending Dafoe's confounding but entertaining gibberish-like speeches. But it got me to really concentrate on the spoken words.

I did not think the narrow view ratio was a necessity; wide aspect, IMO, would have also worked (to show helplessness of humans in the face of harsh storm & removal from social contact).

Enjoyed it quite a bit. Overall a satisfactory and entertaining experience.

4/5 from me.

I watched The Lighthouse last night (Monday) at an arthouse theater in a small college town. I assumed that anyone who wanted to see it already had, and there were only four of us in the theater.

I enjoyed the film. The theater isn't the best and it's screen isn't the best, but it did the job. Regarding some comments here about having difficulty understanding the dialog, this theater had subtitles turned on. Which helped but also distracted. I often watch films with subtitles on my TV at home (even English language films sometimes, since I'm older) but these subtitles were bright white set against a very dark film. Distracting.

I hit the restroom before the film, but with all the water splashing and dripping for two hours, and with my older bladder, I was near to bursting near the end. Couldn't leave though, because big stuff was happening! The restroom was my first stop later.

I look forward to adding this film to my collection.
