Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Ian McKellen to Star in 'Cats' Movie Adaptation

Tom Hooper is directing the film based on Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical.

Working Title and Universal's much-discussed movie adaptation of the hit Cats musical has grown some sizeable claws.

Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden and Ian McKellen are set to star in the film, to be directed by Tom Hooper and telling the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as "the Jellicle choice" and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.

The musical – which s the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history, and was the longest running Broadway show in history from 1997 until 2006 – features some of the best known songs from the stage, including "Memory."

Production on Cats is set to take place later this year in the U.K., with more cast due to be announced. Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) has adapted Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, which itself was based on the T.S. Eliot novel Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

Hooper, who directed the Oscar-winning The King's Speech, is also no stranger to musical adaptations, having previously teamed with Working Title and Universal on 2012's Les Miserables, which was a major box office and awards season success back in 2012.

After he botched Les Miserables [which was fantastic on stage] with its endless close-ups, shaky cam and poor singing, I hoped that Tom Hooper would never be let loose on another musical. And now it seems he has. Great.

I loved Hooper's previous two films, but I can't muster up any enthusiasm for this.

If I don’t hear endlessly about them using real cats and the actors live singing slightly offscreen, then I’m gonna F***ing riot!

I am interested to see how they’ll get a snake to play a cat.

McKellan and even Corden and Jennifer Hudson would make me want to see this.. but Taylor Swift makes me 90% less interested, she was only good in The Lorax and that's because she's barely there and when she is, she's not singing... I understand getting her means an automatic audience for the film, but why didn't they find somebody less polarizing?

Also kind of weird they decide to do such an old play instead of some of the newer ones.

Unless the casting of Swift was all studio and not at all what he wanted, I'm betting Hooper finds her fit for the role intended. His filmography doesn't really paint him as a do what the studio says kind of guy. Especially the way he chose to film the musical number in Les Misérables.

Back in elementary school, my teacher took the class on a field trip to Cats and I must say I'm not one for musicals but it was pretty damn good.

Taylor Swift = Fast Pass

Remember early on when they were trying to force him to use Swift as Eponine in Les Mis? Wonder if he will get her out of the cast again.

I saw CATS on stage once, was bored to tears. Besides 'Memory,' the rest of the music sucked.

Hooper just attended Swift’s concert in London, so it’s not like he hates her guts or anything. I doubt she was “forced” onto the project at all. I think it’s more likely that he remembered her audition for Les Mis and called her up to see if she would be a good fit for Cats.

And I don’t think anyone tried to “force” her inclusion in Les Mis, either. If anything, it was the other way around. It was announced that she was in talks for the role, but they probably balked when they saw the backlash to the news.

Anyways, this will either be a massive success (as the stage show has been) or a total box office bomb.

I am not a fan of Swift at all, but it appears that Hudson will play Grizabella, so I'm not entirely turned off by the project.
