A John Hughes Thanksgiving Double Feature

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)

This is one of my favorite comedies.

Dutch (1991)

1/2

This is one of the more undderated John Hughes written, directed, or produced films. Ed O'Neill plays "Dutch", who offers to pick up his gf's spoiled teenage son from an Atlanta boarding school and bring him home for Thanksgiving. Ethan Embry plays the son, who at the time went by "Ethan Randall". It's a funny movie, but also heartfelt. It definitely has some similarities to Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

2. PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES

This is a great buddy comedy, a great road movie and a great movie to watch as a warm up for the holidays. Steve Martin and John Candy work great with each other as they try to get to Chicago in time for Thanksgiving. This one hits home for me any time I have to delay or rush for a holiday event.

3. JINGLE ALL THE WAY

I saw this for the first time just a few years ago and thought it was a great Christmas comedy. Arnold and Sinbad are both great trying to grab the last hot toy on Christmas Eve and the supporting cast is pretty good too. This one is good enough to make me want to revisit it each year and I added it to my Blu collection last Christmas.

4. BATMAN RETURNS

This sequel to Batman is probably my favorite of the original 4. This is a great superhero movie as well as a great action movie. The Christmas setting adds to the awesome Tim Burton atmosphere. Lots of color and action and Michael Keaton is great as Batman and you get three great villains and a good supporting cast. Great Christmas action movie.

It was okay, the humor didn't really work for me. Looked great though.

Looks like many the classic Christmas specials are making their way to the AMC channel this year.

5. MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET 1947

This classic has been an annual watch for many years. I have the original black and white version on Blu-ray but caught the color version on Tv today. Great performances by all, especially Edmund Gwenn as Santa. I never get tired of this one and will probably check it out again before the end of the year.

6. SCROOGED

This is a funny modern retelling of the classic A Christmas Carol story. Scrooge is a Tv executive who is visited by ghosts as he prepares the network's Christmas special on Christmas Eve. Look for numerous cameos and great performances by the entire cast, not least of which is Bill Murray who is fantastic as Scrooge.
