A very surprising turn of events but wow it's happened now, first R rated movie to gross a billion.

Now the question is: What and when will be the second?

I feel like as time goes on, another billion dollar R rated movie could come along sooner rather than later and if somehow it does manage to grab a global audience internationally including China. The Venom sequel could do potentially big business but i'd say a follow up to Joker itself would possibly gather enough attention too.

Either way, the fact is Joker may stay the highest grossing to budget movie for a long time.

I don't think it will stay that long if Endgame can beat Avatar anything is possible these days

To be fair though, Avatar held the record for like a decade when you consider that it accrued that all during a time when China and other international markets weren't as strong as they are now too. So it was still highly impressive but i give Avatar much more credit. As i do to Joker. Movies that have attained such high box office with single entries and practically no franchise backing.

Avatar did amazing without coming from a known brand or being part of an established phenomenon (comic book movies). Cue somebody telling me it only did well because of the "3D gimmick".

The next Deadpool or some other comic book movie. Joker is a highly popular DC comics character and have been a household name since the Adam West batman series to movie versions of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger. They can't repeat that formula with characters like Mr. Freeze and Zsasz even if they release it in less competitive months like October again.

Joker 2. The transformation of a bad and 'mad' guy (end of Joker 1), to becoming THE bad guy of Gotham, while using his intelligence to thwart the good guys (before Batman arrives). That is a movie I will watch.

I have no idea how to what degree, but the 3D *obviously* had a huge effect on the box office result.

Not really. It's only been around for about 25 years. I don't recall it being around in the '80s at all and I don't remember it being around in the early, early '90s. My best guess is 1993.

As far as Avatar as a movie, I've never actually seen it. I've tried on a few occasions to watch it and haven't been able to make it very far. I just don't think it's very interesting. OTOH, a number of others clearly love it. Of course, that's the way this all works.

First, 25 years does = decades. Second, the internet has been around for a lot longer than that. You don't recall it because it wasn't easy before that.
