I finished the installation of the floating shelf today. I still need to fill in the nail holes, tweak the joint, and do touch up painting, but the major work is done at least.

A piece of advice for anyone thinking about getting popcorn ceilings: don't. While wielding various tools near the ceiling to install the shelf, I occasionally bumped something into the ceiling. Every point of contact is now a spot I need to paint; though fortunately the ceiling is the same color as the shelf, so I can just hit it when I touch up the shelf.

I added curtains over the exterior door and changed the curtains on the windows:

Now to invite David Lynch over for coffee.

Like the setup. When not watching movies, the room can double as a "play" room a la 50 shades of greys. Was that color red, if I'm not mistaken. If I'm ever in the area, I'll rent some girls, swing by, and help you break it in. I especially like your shelves. I've been running out of room for all the new releases. Mind if I ask what you used make them?

Play room is in a different part of the house; gotta keep fluids away from the A/V gear .

The racks are made from common pine boards for the vertical side pieces and horizontal shelves (this was the cheapest material at the time, and probably still is today). The back piece is very thin plywood (less than 1/4" thickness), and the trim pieces are an unspecified type of hardwood.

If you are going to build a custom rack (or hire someone else to), then you can go with cheap, solid material if you're going to paint it. If you prefer the look of stain, then you may want to spend more for higher quality wood. Sorry I was slow in responding, but the thread update notification got caught in my spam filter.

I really like the color combination.....giving it serious thought to use the same colors in my HT once my house is built (maybe a shade or 2 darker red).

Yeah, the red walls aren't quite as dark as I would like either, though it's not a factor when viewing with the lights off (which is most of the time). If you are going to carpet and paint a room, get the carpet installed first if you can because it's a lot easier to get a custom paint color to match the carpet than vice versa. Some scheduling issues made it so we had the painters in before we were able to look for carpet, so the end result is good but not quite ideal for my taste.

I may not paint......I am thinking of curtains on all 4 walls. This way, if I ever move, I won't have to repaint the room. Plus, I plan on adding some bass traps and acoustical elements to the walls. The curtains can easily hide that and the cables/wires as well.

I hired out some exterior work on the house, and seeing some of the scrap lumber from that job that was headed to the landfill, I decided to snag some material and do something I'd been thinking about for a while.

Here's how the area below the screen looked on Friday:

I wanted to raise the speakers up a bit so all the drivers would be behind the acoustically transparent screen and get the top drivers more or less at ear height rather than a few inches lower. So I built these small pedestals:

There was a long, thin rip that would make a good curtain rod, so I built four supports to hold the rod up:

And here's the final result (though I may fiddle around with the curtains to adjust the drapery appearance):

Not bad at all. Rather ingenious to use the extra lumber and stuff. Basically, you made speaker risers....hopefully you notice some improved audio to go with the new aesthetics.

I finally got around to changing out the shiny and white-painted hinges on the doors for some matte black ones.

Old ones:

New ones:

It won't make much of a visual difference, but I'm having the windows replaced today. They're westward facing and the cheap windows that are currently there are terrible about blocking heat as the sun lowers in the afternoon, so we're getting some spiffy new windows that should help keep the room significantly cooler.

Here are the windows I'm about to bid a not-so-fond farewell to:

It's the small things that sometimes matter the most. I assume the windows you currently have are the original windows when you bought the house?

We've had the house for a little under two years, but I assume the old windows date from when it was built back in 1992.

The new window installation went great:

It was a very hot afternoon here in northwest Georgia, so I was happy to verify that the new windows lived up to their promise of blocking most of the heat that passed through the old ones.

Since I had to move a bunch of stuff around for the new window installation, I decided to go ahead and repaint the walls to take further advantage of the theater room's downtime. My sister has a lot of experience as a painter (both as a fine artist and as a house painter), so I recruited her to help me tweak the color and apply the new paint.

It's difficult to get a photo that conveys the difference from how it was before, but it is definitely darker than it used to be. The base color is the same red, but it has more black mixed in and that really helped bring down the intensity of the red. It's still not quite right, but we're probably at about 95% of what I envisioned compared to the around 80% we were at.

Theater room got a new friend today:

I've had the poster tucked away in a closet for almost three decades, and today I finally got around to getting a cheap frame and hanging it up.

I got some new speakers for the back of the theater room; so now the two front and two back left and right speakers (each with an Atmos speaker built into the same cabinet) are all the same, and the center is basically the same thing only without Atmos.

Here's one of the new speakers looming in front of what it's replacing:

And here's how the back of the room looks with the new speakers in place:
