I have an HT question/quandry...

I am currently using a Marantz SR6005 in the theater. It is running a 7.1 setup. I also have a Marantz PM8003 Integrated Amplifier that I am presently not using.

I got to wondering if I can integrate the 8003 into the theater system. The integrated does not have a specific theater bypass switch, but it does have a function they call Power Amp Direct In.

The idea with that (as I understand it) is that I can use the IA as a power amp and another component as the preamp.

The question is, can I use the SR6005 as the preamp in this case? I would like to use the IA just to power the two fronts for analog listening and then just hit the Power Amp Direct In button to have the SR6005 take over when I want to watch movies, etc.

Any ideas how to pull this off? I have the SR6005 owners manual, but on Sunday morning it's kinda like......trying to read through it.

What I need here is a ......who understands how to make this all work.

I think you can, but that's going by an experience I had.

When my Pioneer SA-9500II Integrated was my main amp I was able to hook up a Pioneer SX-727 receiver and use it purely as a Tuner. This tells me that you can convert (for lack of a better word) any component to perform only a specific function.

Your question may be better asked in the AUDIO section or perhaps some of the more audio-centric forums.

Hope that helps.

Sorry for the late reply ....... I believe it can be done but why would you want to do it ?

I know it can be done. Just trying to get some pointers about how to do it.

Well, because the PM8003 is a class AB amp that has a pretty nice sound. I would like to be able to connect my Technics TT, the Bellari phonostage and the Dokorder RTR to it to listen to in a pure 2 channel mode without having to go through all the bullsh** DSP settings in the AVR.

Now, I've answered you question. Would you mind answering mine?
[Show spoiler]unless of course you don't know, which would be

Hey Fred I think it will work the way you would envision. L/R preouts from the 6005 to the power amp direct inputs on the 8003. Then like you say use the front button on the 8003 to toggle between HT or 2 channel. The only downfall I see it the 8003 is only 70 watts per channel and the 6005 is rated at 110. So that might give Audyssey a little challenge to optimize all channels.

fred, i read your manual and it looks like you can do what you are thinking. you just have to remember to switch the IA between Power Amp Direct
mode and normal. when using it for normal HT use, you will have to have both the normal multichannel receiver on & the IA as well. when listening to components connected directly to your IA, you don't have to have your HT receiver on. when set to Power Amp Direct, the multichannel reciever will have the control over the volume of the L & R channels even though they are powered through the IA according to the manual.

at least, that's how i'm reading it.

I'm suspicious of "watts" when it comes to AVR's. The IA has more drive than the more "powerful" AVR. Can't figure that. I think Solar D (below) is on to something. I think the Power Amp Direct In sort of just lets the IA step aside and then the AVR can do its thing. At least that's the hope.

And BTW...your's is a "Thanks" post.

I believe you're right. That was my reading too, but I wasn't sure if I had to reset things in the AVR like assigning the power, speakers, etc. Can't be sure if I have to re-run Audessy or not. Guess I'll find out when I get into it.

And BTW, Your's is a "Thanks" post too.

thanks fred, as for Audyssey, some would say you should re-run it, i'd say listen to it first, if it's close enough that your happy, leave it. if not, then re run it.

it may sound just fine once you do it and you won't want to re-run it. just remember to have the IA turned on while watching movies or you won't have use of the front L & R. other than that, you won't have to change anything in your AVR.

Think I'm going to start the migration now. I was going to wait until next weekend, but now I'm just too curious.

Wish me luck!

Your welcome Fred but I'm not hunting for any Thanks counts. Looking at your manual you do not have the ability to assign amps like my Denon 4311ci does. Both your speaker hookups and your preouts are always live.

Holy Crap! It works!!!!!

And it was amazingly simple. The IA simply bypasses straight to the AVR when the Power Amp Direct is on. SolarD was right. Both units need to be on when watching movies. I really think there is more dynamics in the system now, although that could be just the placebo effect.
