It's about the same price as going to The Nobel Collection and buying their official stainless steel movie prop replica of the one ring with chain separately because that is what's in the LOTR gift set.

So it's true that it just comes with special packaging/ring, but the ring is really high quality/detailed?

These are the only movies that i keep older copies/formats of. Everything I have on 4K, I gave the blu-ray away to my father or sold it. Usually the former.

It's the lowest level ring prop facsimile in their WETA collection as some are semi precious (and expensive), but it's still collectible grade and well done. Usually, their props are from studio molds.

I would have given away the 1080p EE BD’s, as a gift (to my Father ‘n Law, as J am not interested in the extras), but since the release is 2160pBD discs only, I will keep the 1080p BD’s.

It's the same original audio mix just upmixed to 7.1 with Atmos objects. If you only have a 5.1 system then it will get downmixed back to 5.1 which is what the original mix was.

Edit: to clarify these movies aren't nearly old enough to worry about "original sound mixing". Unless they are planning on removing sounds and adding new ones this will be exactly indentical, just an upmix.

Yeah that's not how original mixes work. And no-one knows what they've done on the Atmos remix for this.

Do explain how taking a 5.1 mix and upmixing it to 7.1 and then downmixing it back to 5.1 will make the two 5.1 mixes sound any different.

Anyone know if there will be slipcovers for these if you purchase the $90 set from BB? How is the packaging going to turn out...

It was way before the Complete Recordings. For each theatrical soundtrack, there were two editions, the standard and the limited (in a faux-leather case). When the first limited edition was planned, the color coding for the movies were not decided yet.

Then, once the color coding was in place, the producers of the soundtrack decided to use the same colors, but rotated. And reused them on the CRs.

Because the downmixing on your receiver or player is a purely mathematical formula, X amount from channel A, plus Y amount from channel B etc. Meanwhile upmixing can be a creative process with completely arbitrary changes, and sometimes even changed sound effects. If it wasn't then there would be no point in doing it because you could just let the A/V gear do the upmixing on the fly according to some standardized math.

Having said that I cannot say that I've ever come across an Atmos/7.1 soundtrack originating in 5.1 that sounded appreciably different when downmixed, original audio for mono/stereo-originating tracks is much more important. To me it's a non-issue 99% of the time and to be frank I'd rather use the bits for the video instead, but then I'm not an audio guy. It is completely analogous to not having the original SDR grade on the disc. You can convert the HDR back to SDR, but you won't get the same result.

In a perfect world they would switch out the included Blu-rays in UHD packages for another UHD with the original theatrical SDR grade and theatrical soundtrack, but alas, reality gets in the way.

I enjoyed the 6.1 dts-es mix on the original DVDs of the Extended Editions. Had to re-balance the room every time I watched them, and then go back to my room speaker balance settings for 5.1 titles, which was a minor irritant, but even then that allowed me to play with my sound system for a bit, so that was the upside. I have a 7.1 receiver now, really need to upgrade as the receiver isn't 2.2 compliant.

Yep, the extended DVDs had DTS 6.1 discrete and even the theatrical DVDs were DD 5.1 EX.

You mean LOTR were released theatrically in Dolby 5.1 EX?
