Please forgive this noob question here, but is DV on disc currently truly 12-bit? I mean if the base layer is always HDR10, which is 10-bit, and DV is basically a dynamic metadata track on top of that (again please correct me if I'm wrong here) how can it be 12-bit? I assume 12-bit would need significantly higher storage space and bitrate on disc than what is needed by 10-bit?

Thank you Geoff and zmarty. I'm still hoping some revision will come that will allow the three formats to exist simultaneously, but I'm not going to expect anything. This is a dark day for physical media, especially in it's current state, but it's not world ending either.

Where does it say in the PR release that anyone is releasing a UHD disc mastered with HDR10+?

Players? Sure. But that may be for streaming-only from Amazon.

Fox & WB Movies? Sure. But that may be for streaming-only.

When a disc is mastered in HDR10+ and available for sale, I'll believe it. I won't buy it unless it has an HDR layer, and perhaps not even then, I'll simply stream it.

Otherwise, it's FUD.

Does it strike anyone else as a bit weird that Fox is behind this but Disney, apparently, isn't? Sure the deal hasn't gone through yet but it's still a little odd.

So if we get any HDR10+ discs from Fox this year, I'd enjoy them while they last because who knows what the hell Disney are doing and what the hell they'll do once the deal goes through.

Dunno why DV royalty costs keep coming up; nearly every big player already licenses a crap tonne of Dolby stuff. It's a non-issue for an already premium format over standard Blu-ray.

Cost certainly matters in the case of indie studios but nearly every indie movie with a UHD release hasn't included HDR at all, and HDR10 has been free to use since the beginning. HDR10+ won't change that.

There have been rumors since HDR10+ was announced that there might be HDR10+ to Dolby Vision converters and viceversa. Hopefully they are released. That way if you have either a Dolby Vision or an HDR10+ capable display you can watch both with the dynamic metadata being used.

No, it's not just dynamic metadata, it's also the difference between the 10-bit and the 12-bit versions which gets analysed and then compressed into an enhancement layer using Dolby's special sauce. When the image is unpacked at the other end it decodes that enhancement layer to rebuild the full 12-bit output.

If you currently have discs with Dolby Vision metadata then potentially, yes, if those converters (or adapters, not sure what they’ll be called) are ever released.

"No studios or streaming services will support HDR10+"

Amazon proceeds to announce support.

"No manufacturers other than Samsung will support HDR10+."

Panasonic and Philips TP proceed to announce support.

"No film studios will support HDR10+"

Fox proceeds to announce support.

"No film studio other than Fox will announce support for HDR10+."

WB proceeds to announce support.

Now, "HDR10+ will never be put on disc, despite the support from major film studios and the development of the necessary tools."

I have to agree. Let's see some discs and indeed the BDA approval first. I assume that the latter will follow at CES.

I just got at least 10 Fox UHD blu-rays. I don’t like the thought of having to buy them all over again just for the addition of HDR10+
