The Federation wasn't "obliterated" (which according to the Oxford English Dictionary means to "destroy utterly; wipe out") -- it still exists in a reduced form during the late 32nd Century, and one of the show's larger themes is how the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery help to rebuild it back to its former glory again.

Also, this most recent season of Discovery has been, philosophically, as pure a season of Star Trek as has ever been produced in fifty-plus years. (Please note that this doesn't mean that it's the best; merely that, as a whole, it is most true to the spirit of what has made Trek unique all these many years.)

It started with Burnham and Book trying to help a species that had been isolated since The Burn, offering them some of the new dilithium they'd mined, and continuing to work to help them even after they started shooting. We have the tragedy of the dark-matter anomaly, which destroys Book's homeworld (thus giving us stakes), and then we follow the efforts of numerous scientists (including Stamets) trying to figure the thing out, in true Trek-fashion.

We get Vulcan/Ni'Var rejoining the Federation. We get a magnificent discussion across dozens of species about how to deal with the DMA and their creators, in which the notion of going into battle is considered the bad option. We get finding a way to talk to people, to find a compassionate solution involving people communicating instead of trying to kill each other.

This has been the watchword of the franchise from the beginning, whether it's Kirk choosing to help Balok even after the Fesarius almost destroyed the Enterprise; Picard admitting that he needs Q's help against the Borg; the Dominion War ending, not from military might, but an act of compassion by Odo; or Harry Kim making an AI remember that its job is to protect, not destroy; and so on.

Interesting, my OED (a physical edition from the 70s) doesn't have the word "utterly" there, just "destroy" and "wipe out." But I will grant you it's maybe not the most accurate term; I suspect you get my meaning in any event. The killing of countless human beings, the destruction of the fleet, etc. as I said, left a sour taste in my mouth. (I wasn't particularly thrilled with the destruction of Vulcan in the Kelvin timeline either.)

Other than that first paragraph, I didn't really read the rest of what you wrote to avoid spoilers, as I still plan to watch Season 4 eventually (probably after Picard 3 concludes.) If I don't forget I will re-visit your comments then.

I honestly don't know why this gets a bad rep as the first 2 episodes are great.
