Huge news!

Quote:
After our announcement of the Sergio Leone masterpiece, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, some fans shared their concerns regarding the "yellowishness" of the 4K restoration. We looked into this issue and here are some split screen of the before and after work.

Looks more teal than yellow now, which isn't exsctly a win for accuracy, but still an improvement. I'll buy it.

Mmm, if that is the final result then I am disappointed. Appears that they "color corrected" from the current color grading instead of the raw scan before the contested "yellow grading". Assuming the sample is an example of how they will make their changes.

Such is life.

Thank god. Day one purchase!

Tho its a shame that they did a new 4K transfer of both versions of the film but couldnt be bothered to do a UHD release. Especially considering Unforgiven and 3:10 to Yuma are making the jump to UHD.

Just speculating, but they may not have had access to the raw scan. At any rate, this is certainly better than doing nothing.

Wow, I didn't really think they would be able to address it at all. Interesting development.

This would have to be a pretty stellar new transfer for me to buy it without any cool new special features.

I already own the trilogy box set and I don't like double dipping on titles if I can't sell or trade the previous release.

...redundancy in my collection bothers me.

The yellow cast has been confirmed as Leone's intent, which was not reflected in the prior Blu-ray, just as the framing was wrong.
This is from the review of the 2014 MGM disc. Is there any evidence of Leone ever saying this?

It'd make an easier purchase decision for me if I knew Kino will be releasing Fistful of Dollars (with corrected framing) and A Few Dollars More so I can get rid of my Man with no name trilogy set.

No. The yellow tint is a "feature" of Ritrovata restorations:

Kino on the left, my color tweak on the right.

You can see that it's still pretty graded in a tealish yellow tint, it's just less pronounced than the MGM disc. Beggars can't be choosers of course, so I'm happy for any changes, but I feel like they could improve it a little more if they wanted. The color option I used just gave it a more natural unfiltered look, so I don't claim it to be true to the source either. Somewhere in between would probably be perfect based off the prints I've seen. I'm buying regardless ..Kino didn't have to do anything really, but they still stepped up and attempted to address complaints, and that's rare these days.

No, and it is NOT his intent. No other film print has ever exhibited that coloring — and original IB tech prints have screened in Los Angeles that did not look teal and yellow, so that's the real confirmation.

But at least its decent news. Still doesn't look as good as the 2012 Mondo disc (it's still teal instead of the correct blue), but I might actually pick this up now out of curiosity.
