Scalpel is an excellent little movie! Arrow may be marketing it as a horror film but it's more lurid melodrama with the occasional foray into psychological thriller. (Douglas Sirk for the grindhouse?) The film is dialogue driven and has a certain detached coldness to it that I think might rub some genre fans the wrong way. It really couldn't be more different than Blood Rage.
Robert Lansing and Judith Chapman both give excellent nuanced performances. The cinematography is top notch and the framing often results in beautiful and even classy compositions. Editing is superior for this kind of film but it is slow paced. The script is also much better than you would think for an obscure regional genre film. Highly recommended for people who are more into the arthouse side of genre cinema. (Though I suspect most people will come away with a favorable view of the film) A real hidden gem! |

When I made the Sirk comparison; I was thinking of Magnificent Obsession in particular. The doctor trying to cure his love of blindness has certain parallels to the mad doctor and his daughter-doll in Scalpel. I was just trying to think of how to describe Scalpel and how it isn't really a horror film and would be more accurately be described as a perverted melodrama.

definitely get those two. i originally saw the latter on some spaghetti western set plagued with A/V quality issues, but the quality shown through nonetheless. Day of Anger is a classic, that goes without saying.

Not sure if anyone posted this yet (and apologies if they did, I couldn't find it referenced), but Edgar Wright announced on his Instagram account that his first feature film, A Fistful Of Fingers (1995) was going to be getting a DVD / Blu-ray release via Arrow later this year.
