Couple more "single click" auto-color changes.

That's sad. But some improvement would still be better than no improvement. As illustrated by Mifune's caps.

I saw the trailer for the new Magnificent Seven and it looks like those top screencaps. Bleh.

I just bang my TV's colour temperature into Cool and that does the trick.

Just pop the digital file of the movie on to a davinci resolve timeline (a free program btw) and spend a few days fixing it like the above pics and it'd be fine. Shit Kino can send me it and I'll do it for a free copy of the bluray!

I love that auto correct color grade! So much better than the piss color!

I could live with the clipped highlights, but the yellow color grading is repulsive.

Hopefully Kino does something to reduce the yellow push.

That's the ticket.

I often read about BD releases that aren't to people's taste and they talk about the the whole thing being a botch, and the need to start again, properly etc, etc.

They must have really old TVs with a tuning dial, VH and that's it.

You just have to go to capsaholic to see that Kino releases do not always look exactly the same as other releases sourced from the same master.

To be fair, once you've calibrated your TV/projector etc, you shouldn't have to fiddle with settings for different discs. It's a compromise where there should be none

Different settings required for different sources have served me well in that department too. So it's a rather painless compromise. If a compromise at all. The viewing experience is what matters.

Yep. I've been calibrating my sets to proper 100-nit 709 output for a good few years now, but having that safety net of accuracy gives me the confidence to actually stray from the reservation now and again, especially with the super-tealed releases of certain films.

I'm not saying it's accurate, but certainly would be more welcomed than the current one, I'm sure. If I could do that with one button from a basic program, I'm sure the professionals could certainly do even better with expensive software (again, working within the limitations that Bates mentioned above).
Yeah, it's frustrating that you can get it looking pretty good on maybe 2.3 of the scenes, then you hit one that's way blown out off unsalvageable. I've tried several times to "fix" the MGM disc (now it's just a challenge I pul out every few months or so to see if I learned any color grading tricks that might help, lol).

By comparison, here are a few of the same frames from the 2012 Mondo restoration. The auto grade fix makes it looks similar in many places, and much better than the actual disc, but to my eyes anyway it still has over processed contrast and clipped highlights that unfortunately aren't fixable.

(The soldier's uniforms are the correct blue, not teal)

Problematic shots I ran into trying to re-grade the MGM are ones like the final image.

Mondo (has a beautiful, natural organic look)

MGM

MGM ("auto fix" still leaves it super yellow, and the trees int he background teal, so I did some further adjustments to fix that, but you can see the weird contrast that makes the left half of the screen dark and half the sky white instead of blue, not to mention the Mondo has more detail)

even if they don't correct the color grading, them getting rid of the awfully dubbed reinserted scenes is a huge plus.

Did you try cutting the frame in half with heavy feathering and adjusting each half differently? I've never tried to fix a shot that "off", I'm curious about the best way myself, and that is what I would try (but I don't know if it would work).

Well, I don't really need to, since I recut the Mondo disc and added the English audio. That's my go-to version and doesn't have the grotto scene.
