I'm sure it will be the same with the Kino. Some shots might look more like the prints, and others will look cold and grey or washed out. Either way, this is all gonna come down to preference. I imagine I'll get used to the Kino, and the shorter cut makes it more attractive to me anyways.
Absolutely, the 2014 was recorrected scene by scene, shot by shot so it's not ALL wrong. What it APPEARS like, is that Kino just applied one "reduce yellow" color correction over the whole thing, so the scenes that were really off are better, but scenes that were not bad are now compromised in the other direction.

Yikes... Leave it to Kino to drop the ball on this release.

How Criterion or Arrow didn't end up with this is baffling.

As far as that screencap I like the Kino. I dont think this release is gonna be a stinker, especially since there's some complaint about every other release. I like to support Kino when I can, and I need that theatrical cut. I'm in, but I'll wait for a cheaper price though.

Drop the ball? First you guys didn't like the yellow. Now that the horrible yellow is out, something else is wrong. Nobody will ever be satisfied! I have seen all available screenshots of the Kino and personally I like it at lot. Now at least, people will have a choice on whether they like the yellow or not.

I'm still going to buy it for the shorter cut, but I can't say I'm not disappointed by the screenshots

a UHD/HDR release with a fresh scan is my only hope

Do you know where there are more screenshots of the Kino to compare?

It looks exactly like murch13 says.. that one setting was just placed over the whole movie to take away some yellow. Yeah some shots look fine from the website, but the one being compared on the forum looks horribly washed out.

It just baffles me that a studio can get such a prestigious film and be absolutely lazy with it. They include a false "theatrical cut" and just notch down the yellow, all of which could've taken like 2 days to do, in order to justify some easy $$$ for a re-release.

There are studios like Criterion and Arrow that, although they mess up sometimes, clearly show that they always go the extra mile for their customers.

But Kino is just going for the easy buck here and its pretty disgusting.

Didn't they just eyeball it? Try to suck out a bit of yellow?

Doesn't look great. Will probably keep my pre-order because of the theatrical cut tho.

Easy buck? They spent a lot to just get the title and even more to create the "theatrical cut" and this recoloring all to the major scrutiny of enthusiasts. It's a damned if they do, damned if they don't situation here.

I like the Kino version compared to the messed up black levels and over-abundance of green in the MGM 4K disc. It's not perfect, but unfortunately their hands were tied with how much work they could put on the disc.

I think they deserve a bit of credit and have done more than MGM has done on this title for a long, long time.

I'm looking forward to it for the theatrical cut (or close approximation)

I believe Criterion were outbid for the rights to the Dollars films. Kino just used the current master and edited the colors and cut it down to resemble the US theatrical cut. No doubt Criterion would have done remasters (or re-done the color from the raw negative scans) and would have made sure that we'd get the full-length original Italian version and the proper export cut made for the US, that would have cost a lot more than what Kino did.

As I said, at this point our only hope is Arrow UK.

I think I'll cancel. Spending too much these days anyway and I don't like the look of those screencaps (yeah I know they're just screencaps, but still). I have the theatrical cut on DVD so I'll live with that a bit longer til this comes down in price, if it does.

It honestly doesn't take much to take the Extended Cut and splice out some scenes to make it shorter. As murch13 also pointed out, they didn't even make it like the true theatrical cut. They just popped on the DVD and cut it to look like that.

Honestly, any fan on this website can take the MGM remaster, import it to Premiere, cut some parts out, tone down the yellow for the whole file all in about a day's work. What's to praise about that?

What is this rumor about Arrow UK probably getting this? That's the first time I've heard of this.

I have the 2014 blu, I couldn't even watch 30 minutes of, I just can't take the color it's nauseating. Was hoping to see something good from this new 2017 release but I don't think I'll get it after seen screen caps...color seems subdued but really dull/washed out? And no I'm not "trying to complain about every release" like I say below I just want something I can watch.

Maybe I'll just go backwards and get the DVD, at this point I just want something watchable and Pq will have to take a back seat :/

Edit:
Does anyone know what version is Streaming on Amazon? That is watchable to me

Kino wasn't striving for accuracy here. They were trying to address a problem brought to their attention, and simply eyeballed it. Being that they're not actually a restoration house, they did the best that they could.

This release never had a chance. No matter what was done, half the people would complain and the other half would praise it.
