Bummer!

Still, it will be nice to have the U.S. cut in HD even if the transfer is a wee bit too yellow and the blacks a bit greenish.

The 4K transfer, warts an' all, still looks a hell of a lot better then the late 90's MGM DVD. That disc looks awful.

I really wish they had included the Italian cut instead of MGM's extended edition.

I can see why Sergio Leone cut out the grotto scene. It sucks!

FINALLY!!! Always hated the new scenes with the distracting 'old man' dubbing by Eastwood and Wallach.

Hoping for a fancy slipcover or even a digipack for this release.

I'm not using the term to disparage the U.S. cut, I'm disparaging MGM's choice to continue promoting a bizarrely hybrid cut of the film which matches no theatrical cut ever released anywhere when that cut could be replaced with one which is exactly as the director intended.

It's got the censored cut of a scene. It's not like we're talking about the FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE cuts (also in a beating scene, oddly). Or have I been misinformed?
Since they were both released theatrically, then they are both the theatrical cuts. Period. There's nothing about the Italian cut of this movie that makes it superior to the US cut. No extra story. You can keep on about it, but there won't ever be a full English cut of the Italian version, so it's a needless debate. It doesn't exist and no new dub will fix that. So why bother?

I really appreciate what they did and it's a neat version to look at...but the "old man" voices do take me out of the picture. I actually prefer the US cut. It's the perfect version of the film in my eyes. And it's still two hours and 40 minutes long, so it's not like the film is severely truncated. Even if it's that piss yellow transfer, I feel like a kid on Christmas morning getting the US cut in HD! To me, getting the US version is just as awesome as getting an unaltered Star Wars! Day one for sure. Bring it on!

There are many differences between the US cut and the Extended fancut from John Kirk (that is what it is), including different takes (like the last Tuco scream), and different fades. So the US cut cannot be reconstructed from it. It will be botched and not represent the actual cut, unless they redo all the different parts from an IP scan.

Also the old MGM DVD of the US cut, had problems on the foreign audio tracks, some parts reverted to the main english tracks in different places. It was all wrong, only the laserdiscs mono are correct.

Also all Blu-ray of GBU have wrong pitch on the foreign audio tracks (including the french, and spanish if memory serve), I'm convinced they won't be fixed, this as been going on over 10 years +. You can tell just by listening to the opening credits and switching the audio tracks. Not one of them is pitched the same.

The only way to get the US cut is to download fans reconstructions online.

Also to add, it could be the "Skeleton" shot scene was ripped off the internet by the publisher from a low resolution leak. It only exists on a 35mm print, owned by a fan who kindly shared it online. No attempt by the publisher as been made to contact the fan to obtain the full resolution scan of the source at this time.

This print also has some other extended scenes... No talk about them being included here.

Things aren't looking good.

Of all the changes, Tuco shouting in English for the English version and Italian for the Italian version seems like the least objectionable thing you could bring up.

As an experiment, I'd like you to post this exact comment in the thread for literally *any* Italian horror movie where the US theatrical cut was even one second shorter because of violence cuts.

But they substituted the italian shot for the US shot for the US extended cut... and remapped the sound to fit. That's sacrilege and destruction, as is this cut anyway.

I do have to wonder why they would think an assistant cameraman should have any idea how the film should look. In all honesty they were probably just looking for anyone still alive to say "yes" to the grading. I highly doubt the man was even still working on the film when it came time for editing and timing.

On a sidenote... Those extra closeups they found of the opening flow really nice to my eyes. Would be nice if they could integrate them into a future version.

I didn't realize that -- moviecensorship said the opposite.

I think a bigger change from the theatrical cut to the US cut was when they added Clint Eastwood saying "Sorry, Tuco" as he leaves. And they left that in the extended version. No idea why they would leave that in, that really seems like a moment which was added to soften the character.

It'll probably be dual-mono.

Actually, I meant the old, pre-remastered Blu-ray. I think it had an English mono track on it, though I have no idea if it was the actual original mono, or a downmix with the new sound effects.

That would be my thinking, too. He would have been on set pulling focus, changing lenses, or loading the film, and he may have dealt with camera reports, but it's doubtful he had anything to with the timing.

Actually, the last Tuco shot on the US extended cut is the same as on the US theatrical cut. There is a difference from the Italian cut though (a different take).

Downmix.

I actually did restore the English mono track, sourced from the US LD PCM for both the 4K MGM version and the Mondo version some while ago because of this.

Can we try to get people to contact the relevant people at Kino and just make sure this piss-yellow is dialled back a bit? Or at least make them aware of the concerns over it?

(Would it help? /Rylance)

As much as I appreciate a newly recorded commentary by Tim Lucas, I would have loved to have heard Quentin Tarantino expound on this, his favorite movie of all time (along the lines of David Fincher on the Chinatown blu).

Might be worth holding back on this one given this film's history on Blu-ray!

I'm also hoping that a UK label picks this release up. Ill buy it one way or another though.
