Default Fox Snags Licensing Rights For Entire Halo Franchise

While the Halo film is still in limbo, Fox has signed a deal making them the primary license holder for the entire Halo franchise.
By Brian Sullivan

Less than a year ago, Fox had plans with Universal to produce a movie based on the Halo franchise. Since then, such plans were canceled and news regarding the Halo movie was pretty much non-existent.

Now, however, Fox is back on the Halo wagon, as they have secured the primary licensing rights for the franchise, according to a report from Variety. With Fox at the helm of the franchise, they plan to release a large assortment of products including books, clothing, and other merchandise to coincide with Halo 3's September release. Fox is confident that they can sell licensed products even all the way up to the release of the fourth game in the franchise, due to the series' immense popularity.

This news of Fox handling the licensing for Halo merchandise should not be taken as a hint that the movie is finally undergoing production, however. Thus far, no further information regarding the Halo motion picture has been revealed.

That Means That If A Halo Movie Is Made It Will Be Exclusive To Blu-Ray

Microsoft said that they would not make a blu-ray add-on for the xbox 360 unless the time comes that they would need to. Looks to me like the time is getting very close for them to make one.

I'd laugh to no end.

Halo Movie can be watched on your PS3, but not your 360.

Sorry to burst your bubbles boy's and girls but it only seems Fox has the merchandising rights to Halo and not actual rights to the movie.

i would love them to get rights in every single country so they can't watch a HDDUD made for china
i can imagine all the HDDUD, xbox and halo fans cutting their wrists and commiting suicide with the halo helmet on their head

Fox taking a shine to 'Halo' Studio signs deal to become primary licensor
By BEN FRITZ

'Halo'
'Halo'
Fox is back in the "Halo" business.

Less than a year after its plans to co-produce with Universal a movie based on Microsoft's hit videogame franchise were abruptly canceled, 20th Century Fox has signed a deal to become the primary licensor for "Halo."

That means the studio will handle worldwide merchandise licensing for "Halo" on behalf of the tech giant.

Though the unsuccessful film development helped bring the two companies closer together, Fox's licensing division has a longer relationship with Microsoft. It handled similar duties for "Perfect Dark Zero" and "Kameo: Elements of Power," two Microsoft-published games that came out in late 2005 in conjunction with the launch of the Xbox 360.

"Those two games established our relationship with them as a licensing agency, and those conversations continued during the same time that a 'Halo' film was in development here," said Elie Dekel, exec VP of domestic licensing for Fox.

He added that Fox's licensing division focuses primarily on teens and young adults instead of kids, as some other studios do, which makes "Halo" a good fit.

Fox is aiming to launch a broad array of products, from books to apparel to collectible merchandise, in conjunction with the release of "Halo 3" in September. But given the huge popularity of the vidgame series, Dekel said he's confident his division can continue to sell licensed products in the next few years until a fourth "Halo" game comes out.

"Halo" is one of the videogame industry's most popular franchises. Original game and "Halo 2" have sold more than 14.5 million units.

Fox is already in various stages of discussion with several dozen licenses and will be talking to potential partners at this week's Toy Fair in Gotham.

Unofortunately for you my friend, you have done nothing but confirm my origional post and prove yourself wrong.

Even in your own article that you quoted does it at no time state they have the actual MOVIE RIGHTS, they only have merchandising rights which allow them to make books, magazines and toys etc but not actually have the movie published exclusively on blu-ray.

I don't think M$ are that stupid to give the rights to a competing format to one of it's biggest franchises.

Try to remember that M$ support HD-DUD and would not be stupid enough to output Halo on a rival HD format when they're behind HD-DUD, it would not make sense.

what competing format? M$ can care less about HD DVD. with M$ its about digital downloads and MONEY. this movie would go on standard DVD anyway.
IT DOES NOT MATTER. NOTICE BY THE EXEC VP. OF DOMESTIC LICENSING STATE CONTINUED THE SAME TIME THAT A HALO film was in development there at fox. notice in the headline of the post it was the "FOX STUDIOS" THAT MADE THE DEAL
YOU CAN BET THERE WILL BE A MOVIE . BY fox.

Halo was originally going to be Mac only. It was even given its first major demonstation at a MacWorld event.

Then MS bought the developer and made it Windows (and then MS products) only.

Now it looks like if there are future movies and other products they won't play on MS specific gaming hardware.
