Question Halo (the film) - Who has the rights?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464037/

If you look at the top of the page it states Fox have purchased the rights but it also states MS sold the rights to Universal. What is the current status on the film rights

movies based on games don't have great track records, I'm hardly holding my breath for this.

who cares, it would still be a big smack in the face to HD-DVD supporters. Since most HD-DVD supporters have 360s.

Peter Jackson was rumored to direct it. Not sure if it's still the case.

Ya he is, there was a comment by Microsoft Gaming VP today that was commenting on Bungie leaving Microsoft, but also that they are looking forward to working with Peter Jackson on the "wholely owned" Halo property.

I dont belive that... the problem is so many people cry and complain about the game movies that most of the movies are looked at as "busts"

but to answer the baseline question its fox and universial

"May 26, 2007 —

Fear not Halo nation! The Halo movie will still see the light of day, according to Peter Jackson. In an interview with OnFilm Magazine, PJ revealed that he expects 20th Century Fox and Universial to have a renewed interest in the movie once they experience the Halo hype train for themselves when Halo 3 releases September 25th of this year. When asked about first time director Neill Blomkamp, Jackson responded with the following:

We wouldn't want to do it with anybody else. It'll be Neill's call.

Peter has said that him and co-executive producer Fran Walsh refuse to do the movie unless Neill is the director."

Well if Universal and Fox is teaming up on the movie, then it can be released on both formats.

So peter is just producing... not directing.

It might be pretty good. Funny that the duds will have to get a BD player to watch it in HD.

"Halo Declared Dead" from IGN

http://movies.ign.com/articles/825/825257p1.html

Director says movie is not happening.
by Stax

October 5, 2007 - Filmmaker Neill Blomkamp had been slated to direct Fox-Universal's feature film version of the videogame sensation Halo but the project infamously fell apart last year. Still, there had been rumblings that Halo could still fight its way onto the big screen. It seems, however, that even Blomkamp has given up hope for the Halo movie.

"The film is entirely dead. In the configuration it was in. Whatever happens with that movie, assuming that movie gets made, will be a totally different configuration," Blomkamp informed Creativity-Online.com. "It's not so much me as the entire vessel sank. Basically, it was a combination of; there were two studios involved that weren't getting along in the process of making it, Universal and Fox. That kind of stuff happens, it's a fragile industry. So the film collapsed at the end of last year, and it's been dead, ever since then. I'll be curious to see what happens."

Blomkamp made a trilogy of live-action Halo short films to help promote the release of the Halo 3 game but they were not, contrary to fans' hopes, meant to rekindle interest in the movie. "There was not even one percent of my mind in doing those short pieces to try and resurrect the film. And I think maybe that's because I'm closer to the film, I know how hard it fell, and I know that doing things like that was not how you're going to get it back on its feet," Blomkamp explained.

But Blomkamp didn't shut the door on Halo entirely, saying, "As I'm getting older one of the things I've realized most about this industry is never say never. That's the first thing. Right now, I can't see myself doing that film. But I'm not going to say that I'm not going to do it. So in the present moment, right now, I could take it or leave it. It doesn't matter to me anymore. There's too much interesting shit out there. The film has the capacity, if things line up correctly, to be, I think, really cool. But it ended up collapsing, and things happen for a reason."

I'm reading the quote, but where's the link?

BTW, I can see this as being truthful, because Universal and Fox are sorta opposing sides in quite a few endeavors.

Yeah, that's what I was going to mention. Jackson is busy getting ready for filming The Lovely Bones, plus probably one more movie after. That and the New Line legal blunders are starting to work themselves out which means he will possibly start negotiations about filming The Hobbit and a sequel to that derived soley from Tolkien's appendices to bridge the gap between The Hobbit and LOTR.

I'd say he's a little too busy to worry about producing a video game movie anymore. And if he can squeeze it in, it sounds like he's gonna be busy for a while so this whole format war will be long over by the time it ever gets around to home video.

Where are you hearing that issues surrounding The Hobbitt are being resolved. that would be great news but I have yet to hear that. Also I hadn't heard anything about a Hobbit 2.

One rumored movie from a video game I'd be interested in seeing is Onimusha. I think it even involves the original actor that was used as the model for the game.
