So i saw this on Christmas Day, I had a lot of apprehensions because I'm Colombian myself and I was wondering how they would treat my culture.
First, I'll give my review as a Disney movie in its own right and then from the perspective of my culture. The film itself was decent, although it didn't blow me away, the story itself had a lot of potential but left a lot of that on the table. It could have been even more fun than it was and really play with the concept of a living house with all these amazing rooms but they seem to want to spend more time being sincere and dewy-eyed about family. And I'm sorry, there were just too many songs this time around and only 2 felt were any good. I'm not sure how many there were but they really should have rained it in especially in the second half of the movie. They could have cut the last couple of songs as the movie ground to a halt every time just as you were getting into the story, and the same message could have been said in a couple of lines of dialogue. I watched this with my mom and of course allowing for it to be animated, it was impressive as my mom grew up in a village that looked just like that in the '60s, she was basically a countryside girl and apparently look like Isabela but with lighter skin ![]() Overall it was 'fine', I'd probably watch it again in a year or two but in no rush. Both me and my mom agreed that Coco was a far better movie and felt more authentic to the Latin culture. Pixar nailed it with that one, better more appropriate music and the story was a heck of a lot more fun. 6/10 (coco is a solid 8/10) |

To my knowledge, Dinosaur is the only Disney animated film where people died making it. True story. They were shooting a live-action background plate on a crane, two guys and the camera on top, and the crane operator accidentally swung the two into high-voltage power lines. Killed them instantly and the crane operator was also injured.
That doesn't make Dinosaur a bad movie...the plan was not to use any dialog and just tell the story visually, as in the bravura opening sequence. Michael Eisner insisted on modern dialog, and the writing was not Disney's finest hour...the same problem as the next three films (Brother Bear, Home on the Range, and Chicken Little). Writing had already become something of an issue, arguably starting with Pocahontas and the gargoyle characters in Hunchback, which made the Pixar brand stand out even more from the Disney product...solid writing in addition to the visuals, beginning with the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Toy Story (which was a milestone for American animation itself). By the way: funny that Disney considers Dinosaur animation and The Lion King live action when Dinosaur has more live action shots than The Lion King. |

Seems like each time someone wins a Tony for Best Musical in the last decade, Disney's like "I'm here to talk to you about the Disney initiative":
Pasek and Paul/Dear Evan Hansen = Aladdin (remake), Snow White Robert Lopez/The Book of Mormon = Frozen, Coco Lin-Manuel Miranda/Hamilton = Moana, Encanto, Mary Poppins Returns, The Little Mermaid (remake). Have they announced anything with Anais Mitchell? Last edited by Poya; 12-29-2021 at 08:33 AM. |

I still haven't seen three films on that list...I adored Soul, don't get me hyped for Luca. Onward is going to be hard to beat for the most disappointing film on that list. It's not bad, just forgettable.

Onward is so derivative it looks like it was made by Sony or a lesser 2nd rate studio. I don't know why it got so many rave reviews.

All animated films from Pixar and Disney get rave reviews even if they are pretty mediocre. Critics really think about them as children's films and nothing more and if kids love it then it's a "good" movie. This wasn't the case 20 years ago. Disney would never dare making something like Hunchback ever again.

I thought this was just okay -- I didn't LOVE the music like I expected to (but to be fair, Lin Manuel Miranda hasn't grown on me) and a lot of the characters were one-dimensional. It wasn't terrible, but it's not amazing either. I liked Moana more.
